A routine virtual court appearance took a dramatic turn when a man accused of seriously injuring a police officer abruptly disconnected his iPad during a hearing after prosecutors began discussing his criminal history.

The defendant, 34-year-old Hector Rivera of Plaistow, New Hampshire, appeared remotely from jail to face charges connected to a violent incident that occurred during a traffic stop in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Traffic Stop Allegedly Ends With Officer Dragged by Vehicle

According to investigators, the incident began when police stopped a vehicle and attempted to detain Rivera. Authorities allege that Rivera moved into the driver’s seat and sped away while an officer was attempting to intervene.

Police say the officer became caught in the moving vehicle and was dragged as Rivera fled the scene. The officer suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he continued receiving treatment.

The incident sparked an immediate investigation, leading to Rivera’s arrest shortly afterward.

Multiple Serious Charges Filed

Prosecutors have charged Rivera with several offenses, including assault with intent to murder, assault and battery on a police officer, aggravated assault and battery, failure to stop for police, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and resisting arrest.

Authorities also stated that Rivera was wanted on additional matters related to alleged violations of a court-issued protection order.

Virtual Hearing Takes Unexpected Turn

During the court appearance, Rivera initially appeared reluctant to participate in the proceedings. As the hearing continued, prosecutors reviewed details of his criminal background as part of the bail discussion.

Moments later, Rivera reportedly became agitated and began arguing during the hearing. The situation escalated when he grabbed the court-issued iPad being used for the virtual appearance and disconnected the device, abruptly ending his participation.

The unexpected action interrupted the proceedings and drew attention from courtroom officials.

Officer Continues Recovery

Meanwhile, the injured officer remains focused on recovery after suffering serious injuries during the encounter. Authorities have described the incident as a dangerous and violent act that placed the officer’s life at risk.

Law enforcement officials continue to support the officer and his family as he undergoes treatment.

Legal Proceedings Continue

Despite the disruption during the virtual hearing, the criminal case will move forward through the court system. Rivera remains in custody as prosecutors pursue the charges against him.

The case has attracted significant attention due to both the severity of the allegations and the unusual courtroom incident that unfolded during the virtual hearing.
