A major breakthrough has been made in the long-unsolved disappearance and death of 27-year-old Gretchen Fleming, a West Virginia woman who vanished after a night out in December 2022. Authorities allege that Fleming was kidnapped and murdered by Preston Pierce, a 58-year-old man who was recently extradited to West Virginia to face multiple felony charges connected to her death. According to investigators, Pierce concealed Fleming’s body in a wooded area, where her remains remained undiscovered for years.

The case drew widespread attention throughout West Virginia and neighboring states after Fleming disappeared under suspicious circumstances following an evening at a local bar in Parkersburg.

Gretchen Fleming’s Final Night

Investigators say Fleming was last seen alive on December 4, 2022, after spending time at a bar in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Authorities determined that she left the establishment with Preston Pierce during the early morning hours.

Police later learned that Fleming left behind personal belongings, including her purse and wallet, something family members and investigators considered highly unusual. When she failed to contact relatives or friends for an extended period, concern quickly grew.

Family members reported her missing after they had not heard from her for more than a week. The disappearance launched an extensive investigation involving local law enforcement agencies and numerous public appeals for information.

Investigation Focuses on Preston Pierce

As detectives reconstructed Fleming’s final known movements, evidence increasingly pointed toward Preston Pierce as one of the last people known to have seen her alive.

Investigators spent years gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage, and examining digital records. Authorities ultimately presented their findings to a grand jury, which returned an indictment against Pierce.

According to court records, prosecutors allege that Pierce kidnapped Fleming and later killed her. Investigators further contend that he transported and concealed her body in a remote wooded area in an effort to hide the crime and prevent discovery.

Human Remains Found in Wooded Area

A significant development occurred in September 2025 when human remains were discovered in a wooded section of Wirt County, West Virginia.

The remains were recovered and sent for forensic examination. Through scientific testing and investigative work, authorities eventually confirmed that the remains belonged to Gretchen Fleming.

The identification provided long-awaited answers to Fleming’s family, who had spent nearly three years searching for information about her fate.

Investigators believe the wooded location was deliberately selected to conceal the victim’s body and delay its discovery.

Grand Jury Indictment

Following the identification of the remains and the completion of additional investigative work, a grand jury issued a multi-count indictment against Preston Pierce.

The charges reportedly include:

  • First-degree murder
  • Felony murder
  • Kidnapping
  • Concealment and improper disposal of a human body

Prosecutors allege that the kidnapping directly led to Fleming’s death and that Pierce took deliberate steps afterward to hide evidence of the crime.

Arrest in North Carolina

Authorities located Pierce in Buncombe County, North Carolina, where he was arrested on May 15, 2026.

Following his arrest, officials initiated extradition proceedings to return him to West Virginia. Pierce subsequently waived his right to contest extradition, allowing authorities to transfer him back to the state where the alleged crimes occurred.

Law enforcement agencies from multiple jurisdictions worked together during the arrest and extradition process.

Suspect’s Background Draws Attention

Court documents and media reports indicate that Pierce has also been known by the name Darrell Lott. Reports further noted that he had previously worked in law enforcement, a detail that attracted additional public attention after the indictment was announced.

Authorities have not suggested that his prior employment affected the investigation, but the revelation generated significant interest as details of the case became public.

Prosecutors Detail Alleged Crimes

According to the indictment, prosecutors contend that Pierce unlawfully restrained and abducted Fleming before causing her death.

Investigators further allege that after the killing, Pierce transported and concealed the victim’s body in a wooded area to avoid detection by law enforcement.

The exact circumstances surrounding Fleming’s death have not been fully disclosed publicly, and additional details may emerge during future court proceedings.

Family Waited Years for Answers

For Gretchen Fleming’s family, the indictment represents the latest development in a painful search for justice that lasted nearly four years.

Relatives repeatedly appealed for information throughout the investigation and continued to cooperate with law enforcement as detectives pursued leads.

The discovery and identification of Fleming’s remains brought confirmation of what family members had long feared while also providing investigators with critical evidence in the homicide case.

Police Praise Persistence of Investigators and Family

The Parkersburg Police Department acknowledged the extensive effort required to solve the case and publicly thanked Fleming’s family for their patience, resilience, and cooperation throughout the lengthy investigation.

Officials noted that numerous investigators, forensic specialists, and supporting agencies contributed to the case over several years.

Law enforcement representatives described the indictment as a significant step toward accountability but emphasized that the criminal proceedings are still ongoing.

Current Status of the Case

Preston Pierce is currently being held without bond while awaiting court proceedings in West Virginia.

As the case moves through the judicial system, prosecutors will seek to prove allegations that he kidnapped and murdered Gretchen Fleming before concealing her body in a wooded area.

The indictment marks one of the most important developments in a case that remained unresolved for years and left a family searching for answers about what happened after a young woman left a bar on what was supposed to be an ordinary night out.
