A disturbing domestic violence case in Connecticut came to light after a witness noticed a trail of blood and alerted authorities, ultimately leading to the discovery that a man had allegedly stabbed his estranged wife to death before attempting to take his own life. Police say the incident unfolded at the home of a well-known local café owner and ended with murder charges against the husband.

The case has shocked residents of Winsted, Connecticut, where the victim was known as a respected business owner and community member. Investigators say the tragedy was the culmination of years of marital problems, domestic violence allegations, and substance abuse issues.

Victim Identified as Local Café Owner Carrie Stetson

The victim was identified as Carrie Stetson, a well-known café owner in Winsted. Authorities say she was found dead inside her residence on June 8 after suffering multiple sharp-force injuries. An autopsy later determined that she died from wounds to her neck and torso, and the death was officially ruled a homicide by the state medical examiner.

According to investigators, Carrie and her estranged husband had been living separately amid ongoing marital difficulties. Court records indicated that she had sought legal protection from him months before the fatal attack.

Blood Found Inside Home Raises Alarm

The investigation began when concerned family members entered the residence and noticed blood inside the home. Alarmed by what they saw, they contacted law enforcement. Officers responding to the scene followed evidence inside the residence and discovered a horrifying situation.

Police found Carrie Stetson deceased in a bedroom. Her estranged husband, identified as Leon Stetson, was found lying on top of her and suffering from severe injuries to his neck. A blood-covered knife measuring approximately seven to eight inches long was located near the victim’s head.

Husband Allegedly Confessed to Killing His Wife

According to an arrest warrant, Leon Stetson later admitted responsibility for the killing. Because a deep wound to his neck left him unable to speak, he reportedly communicated with investigators through written notes while hospitalized.

In one written statement cited by police, Stetson allegedly wrote that he had killed his estranged wife and also wanted to die. Investigators said he described entering the home earlier that day and waiting for Carrie to return so they could talk.

“Things Got Ugly,” Suspect Wrote

According to the warrant, Stetson told investigators that the conversation initially began as a discussion between the estranged couple. However, he claimed that events quickly deteriorated.

He allegedly wrote that after Carrie told him to leave and pushed him, “things got ugly.” Authorities believe the confrontation then turned deadly.

Investigators say the evidence at the scene and the medical examiner’s findings were consistent with a violent stabbing attack.

Attempted Suicide Follows Fatal Attack

After allegedly killing his wife, Stetson reportedly attempted suicide. In his written statement to police, he indicated that he tried to end his own life but survived.

Emergency responders found him critically injured and transported him by helicopter to Hartford Hospital for treatment. Despite efforts by first responders to save Carrie Stetson, she was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived.

Suspect Hospitalized Before Arrest

Because of the seriousness of his injuries, Leon Stetson remained hospitalized while investigators gathered evidence and obtained an arrest warrant. Once medically stable enough for legal proceedings, he was formally arrested and charged.

Authorities charged him with murder, home invasion, and violation of a protective order. He was arraigned virtually from his hospital bed, and a judge set his bond at $3 million.

Protective Order Was Already in Place

Court documents revealed that Carrie Stetson had previously sought legal protection from her estranged husband. In April, a judge granted a protective order that prohibited him from entering her residence.

According to court filings, Carrie described Leon’s behavior as increasingly volatile and dangerous. The documents cited concerns related to his alleged crack cocaine addiction and escalating conduct.

Prior Domestic Violence Allegations

The arrest warrant detailed previous incidents between the couple. Investigators said Leon had earlier been arrested on domestic violence allegations involving Carrie.

Police records alleged that during one argument he ripped a necklace from her neck and later smashed her cellphone when she attempted to contact law enforcement. Those incidents contributed to the protective order that was in place at the time of her death.

Family Says They Feared Violence Could Escalate

One of the most heartbreaking details in the investigation came from the couple’s son, who spoke with police after the killing. According to investigators, he described his father as a longtime crack cocaine user and said substance abuse had caused years of problems within the marriage.

The son reportedly told detectives that he had feared for some time that his father might eventually kill his mother.

Relationship Tensions Intensified Before Killing

The warrant also stated that Carrie had developed a relationship with another man after years of marital turmoil. Investigators said the relationship began as a friendship and later became more intimate as the marriage deteriorated.

According to police, tensions escalated further shortly before the homicide. Detectives noted that Leon Stetson allegedly posted a message on social media referencing his estranged wife’s new romantic partner the day before the killing.

Community Left Reeling by Tragedy

The death of Carrie Stetson has deeply affected the Winsted community, where she was widely known through her business and local involvement. Friends, family members, and customers have expressed shock and grief over the circumstances surrounding her death.

The case has also renewed attention on the dangers associated with domestic violence, particularly situations involving protective orders, ongoing threats, and escalating personal conflicts. Investigators continue to pursue the prosecution of Leon Stetson as the criminal case moves through the court system.

Current Status of the Case

As of the latest court proceedings, Leon Stetson remains charged with murder, home invasion, and violating a protective order. Prosecutors allege that he unlawfully entered the residence, fatally stabbed his estranged wife, and then attempted suicide. The investigation remains active as authorities prepare for future court hearings.
