Man involved in ‘horrific traffic crash’ kidnapped witness who saw it unfold and drove around with her for 4 hours
A Colorado man has been sentenced to decades behind bars after admitting that he kidnapped a woman who stopped to help following a serious traffic crash and then held her captive for approximately four hours while driving across multiple counties.
The case drew widespread attention because the victim was not randomly targeted. Instead, she became involved after witnessing what authorities described as a serious traffic crash near a major highway interchange. Prosecutors said her decision to stop and report the collision led to a terrifying ordeal that lasted for hours before law enforcement officers were finally able to rescue her.
Defendant Receives 26-Year Prison Sentence
According to the Pueblo County District Attorney’s Office, 29-year-old Shane McSwane pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping and one count of attempted aggravated robbery. Following his guilty plea, a judge sentenced him to 13 years in prison on each count.
The court ordered the sentences to run consecutively, meaning one sentence will begin after the other is completed. As a result, McSwane received a total prison sentence of 26 years.
Prosecutors said the lengthy sentence reflected the seriousness of the crimes and the trauma inflicted upon the victim and her family.
Crash Witness Becomes Victim
The incident began on May 25, 2025, near the interchange of Interstate 70 and Interstate 225 in Aurora, Colorado.
Authorities said Grace Dotson witnessed a traffic collision in the area. After seeing the crash, she stopped to call 911 and report what had happened.
Instead of simply serving as a witness, Dotson soon became the victim of a violent crime.
Investigators said McSwane forced his way into her vehicle, effectively carjacking the vehicle and kidnapping her. What began as an attempt to assist after a crash quickly turned into a frightening abduction.
Four Hours of Captivity
Prosecutors said McSwane held Dotson captive for approximately four hours after taking control of her vehicle.
During that time, he allegedly drove erratically and traveled in numerous directions while keeping the victim against her will. The district attorney’s office described the situation as a nightmare that unfolded over several hours as the victim’s family desperately tried to determine where she was.
Authorities said that at certain points during the ordeal, McSwane allowed Dotson to answer phone calls from worried family members. Those brief communications became crucial because her loved ones quickly realized something was terribly wrong.
Victim Secretly Sought Help
Despite the danger she faced, Dotson managed to communicate with others and provide clues about her situation.
Reports indicate that she was able to notify emergency dispatchers about the traffic crash that had preceded the kidnapping. She also sent a message reading “help me” to her mother.
Her boyfriend later said that after speaking with her, he immediately recognized that she was not safe and that something serious was happening.
Those communications became vital as family members and law enforcement worked to locate her.
Journey Across Colorado
Authorities said the kidnapping did not remain confined to the Denver metropolitan area.
After driving around various locations, McSwane eventually headed south on Interstate 25 toward Pueblo County.
The situation escalated further when authorities received reports of a robbery at a Circle K convenience store in Colorado City. Investigators determined that the vehicle allegedly used in that robbery matched the description of the vehicle that had been carjacked from Dotson.
The discovery gave law enforcement another lead in their effort to locate the suspect and rescue the victim.
Deputies Launch Pursuit
After receiving information about the suspect vehicle, deputies located it traveling northbound on Interstate 25 toward Pueblo.
Law enforcement officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but prosecutors said McSwane refused to comply.
Instead, he allegedly fled from deputies, turned around, and began traveling southbound on the interstate while continuing to evade authorities.
The pursuit prompted officers to deploy additional tactics to bring the situation to an end safely.
Stop Sticks and PIT Maneuver End the Ordeal
Authorities eventually used stop sticks to deflate the vehicle’s tires.
Deputies also employed a Precision Immobilization Technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, to stop the fleeing vehicle.
The pursuit ended in Huerfano County, where officers successfully took McSwane into custody and rescued Dotson.
The rescue brought an end to what prosecutors later described as one of the most terrifying experiences imaginable for the victim and her family.
Family Describes the “Worst Four Hours” of Their Lives
During sentencing proceedings, Dotson and several members of her family addressed the court.
According to prosecutors, they described watching in horror as the victim’s phone location moved farther and farther south on Interstate 25 after she had been abducted.
Family members characterized the experience as the worst four hours of their lives and said they felt helpless as they tried to determine where she was and whether she would survive.
Their statements highlighted the emotional toll the kidnapping had on everyone connected to the victim.
Victim Shows Compassion Despite Trauma
One of the most notable aspects of the sentencing hearing was the compassion shown by Dotson and her relatives.
Even after enduring the ordeal, the victim and her family expressed hope that McSwane would work to improve himself while incarcerated.
Prosecutors noted that they hoped he would become a better person by the time he is eventually released from prison.
Their comments stood in stark contrast to the fear and uncertainty they experienced during the kidnapping.
Prosecutor Praises Victim’s Courage
Pueblo County District Attorney Kala Beauvais praised Dotson’s resilience following the sentencing.
Beauvais said that few people could truly understand what the victim endured during the four-hour ordeal. She commended Dotson for displaying remarkable courage while confronting the defendant in court and speaking about her experience.
The prosecutor described the victim as strong, resilient, and compassionate, emphasizing that she carried herself with dignity despite surviving what was described as an unforgettable nightmare.
Case Comes to a Close
With the sentencing now complete, the criminal case has formally concluded. McSwane will spend 26 years in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping and attempted aggravated robbery.
The case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a routine act of public assistance can turn dangerous. Grace Dotson stopped to report a traffic crash she had witnessed, only to become the victim of a violent kidnapping that carried her across multiple Colorado counties before law enforcement officers finally rescued her.
More than a year after the incident, prosecutors said the sentence ensures accountability for the crimes while recognizing the extraordinary courage displayed by the victim throughout the investigation and court proceedings.
