A charter bus traveling from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina, allegedly failed to slow down as it approached backed-up traffic.

Investigators say the bus slammed into a Chevrolet Suburban carrying Mafalda and other occupants. The impact was so powerful that the SUV was pushed forward into additional vehicles, triggering a devastating chain reaction involving at least six vehicles.

Mafalda was riding inside the Chevrolet Suburban when it was struck from behind by the bus. She suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead as a result of the crash. Her husband, who was traveling with her, survived but suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized in critical condition.

The collision continued beyond Mafalda’s vehicle. The force of the crash pushed the Suburban into an Acura carrying a family of four from Greenfield, Massachusetts. That vehicle caught fire following the impact, killing all four occupants.

In total, five people died and 44 others were transported to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical. Emergency responders rushed to the scene as debris scattered across the interstate and multiple vehicles were left heavily damaged.
