Two treated for minor injuries after car plunges into Dracut’s Beaver Brook
Two young women were hospitalized with minor injuries early Thursday morning after their vehicle crashed through a roadside guardrail and plunged into Beaver Brook in Dracut, prompting a swift emergency response and water rescue operation.
Authorities say both occupants managed to escape the vehicle on their own before rescue crews arrived, helping prevent what could have been a far more serious incident.
Vehicle Found Partially Submerged in Brook
According to officials, the crash occurred at approximately 2:10 a.m. along Lakeview Avenue near Primrose Hill Road.
Emergency dispatchers received reports of a vehicle in the water, sending police, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel to the scene.
When first responders arrived, they discovered a Subaru resting partially submerged in Beaver Brook roughly 25 feet below the roadway after crashing through a guardrail.
The vehicle had left the roadway under circumstances that remain under investigation.
The dramatic scene required rescuers to navigate steep terrain and water conditions while ensuring the safety of the vehicle’s occupants.
Occupants Escape Before Rescue Crews Arrive
Officials said the driver and passenger were able to get out of the vehicle without assistance before emergency personnel reached the brook.
The driver was identified as a 24-year-old woman from Lowell, while the passenger was identified as a 24-year-old woman from Newburyport.
Although both women escaped the submerged vehicle, they still faced the challenge of climbing the steep embankment back to the roadway.
Firefighters deployed ropes and specialized rescue equipment to assist the pair in safely reaching the road above.
Rescuers praised the women for managing to exit the vehicle quickly after the crash, a factor that likely contributed to the relatively minor nature of their injuries.
Hospitalized With Minor Injuries
After being brought to safety, both women were evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene.
Authorities said they suffered only minor injuries despite the severity of the crash.
The pair were subsequently transported to Lowell General Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Officials have not released additional information regarding their conditions, but authorities indicated the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Swift Water Rescue Team Responds
The incident required assistance from the Dracut Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue Team.
Firefighters wearing specialized personal protective equipment entered Beaver Brook to inspect the submerged vehicle and ensure no additional occupants remained inside.
The water rescue operation was conducted while towing crews worked to recover the damaged Subaru from the brook.
Officials said firefighters carefully searched the vehicle and surrounding area before confirming that no further rescue efforts were necessary.
The response highlighted the importance of specialized water rescue capabilities, even in incidents where occupants have already escaped.
Towing Crews Remove Vehicle
Once rescue operations concluded, recovery efforts began to remove the vehicle from the brook.
Authorities said Martineau’s Towing and RGA Towing worked together to extract the Subaru from the water.
The recovery operation required careful coordination due to the vehicle’s location below the roadway and the difficult terrain surrounding the brook.
Photos released by officials showed emergency crews and tow operators working in the early morning hours to retrieve the damaged vehicle.
Investigation Ongoing
Investigators are continuing to examine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and crash into Beaver Brook.
Officials have not indicated whether speed, road conditions, driver impairment, or other factors may have contributed to the incident.
No citations or charges have been announced.
Authorities are expected to review evidence from the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
Community Relieved After Close Call
Residents familiar with the stretch of Lakeview Avenue expressed relief that both occupants survived the crash with only minor injuries.
Given the vehicle’s plunge into water and the significant drop from the roadway, officials noted that the outcome could have been much worse.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers drivers face during overnight travel and the importance of remaining alert behind the wheel.
For now, investigators continue working to determine exactly what led to the crash while the two women recover from their injuries.
The crash remains under active investigation.
