Teen returning items to ex-girlfriend at Walmart sees her with new guy and shoots him dead
An 18-year-old New Hampshire man has been sentenced to decades in prison after admitting responsibility for a deadly shooting that occurred in a Walmart parking lot when he unexpectedly encountered his former girlfriend and her new companion.
The case, which shocked the Keene community in 2025, ended this week when Thomas Pickford pleaded guilty to reckless second-degree murder in the death of Christian Walker, a 17-year-old high school student. Pickford was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison, though court records indicate he may be eligible to reduce his minimum sentence through participation in educational, behavioral, and rehabilitation programs while incarcerated.
Routine Visit Turns Deadly
According to prosecutors, the incident occurred during the early morning hours of June 25, 2025, at a Walmart store on Winchester Street in Keene.
Authorities said Pickford had gone to the store with the intention of returning personal belongings to his former girlfriend following the end of their relationship. However, when he arrived in the parking lot, he reportedly saw her sitting in a pickup truck with another teenager, later identified as Christian Walker.
Investigators said the encounter appeared to trigger a deadly chain of events.
After dropping off the items, Pickford got back into his vehicle and began driving away. Prosecutors said that while leaving the parking lot, he raised a handgun through the window of his vehicle and fired multiple shots toward the truck where Walker was sitting. One of the bullets struck Walker in the abdomen.
Victim Dies After Emergency Response
Witnesses immediately called 911, prompting a rapid response from police officers and emergency medical personnel.
Responders found Walker suffering from a serious gunshot wound and rushed him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite efforts by medical staff, the teenager later died from his injuries.
The state’s medical examiner determined that Walker died from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen and officially ruled the death a homicide.
Investigation Quickly Identifies Suspect
Law enforcement officers from the Keene Police Department and the New Hampshire State Police launched an intensive investigation immediately after the shooting.
Authorities were able to identify Pickford as the primary suspect within hours. Detectives tracked him to his residence, located only a few miles from the Walmart, where he was arrested later the same day.
Investigators subsequently recovered a 9mm handgun that prosecutors said matched the weapon used during the shooting. The firearm reportedly belonged to Pickford’s mother and had been stored inside a secure safe at the family home.
During questioning, Pickford admitted firing the weapon but reportedly claimed he did not intend to strike anyone. Prosecutors nevertheless argued that his actions demonstrated a reckless disregard for human life, ultimately resulting in Walker’s death.
Plea Agreement Avoids Trial
Rather than proceed to a jury trial, Pickford entered a guilty plea to reckless second-degree murder.
Under New Hampshire law, the charge carries a significant prison sentence while avoiding the uncertainties of a lengthy trial. The plea agreement brought an end to months of legal proceedings and spared Walker’s family from having to relive the tragedy in court testimony.
The court ultimately imposed a sentence of 27 years to life, ensuring that Pickford will spend decades behind bars before becoming eligible for parole consideration.
Remembering Christian Walker
Family members remembered Christian Walker as a caring, energetic teenager whose life was cut tragically short.
According to his obituary, Walker had recently completed his junior year of high school and was known for his fearless personality, loyalty to friends, and close relationships with family members. Loved ones described him as a devoted son, brother, grandson, and friend who left a lasting impact on those around him.
His death devastated family, classmates, and community members who struggled to understand how a brief encounter in a parking lot could end in such violence.
A Case Highlighting the Dangers of Emotional Conflict
Prosecutors said the shooting serves as a reminder of how quickly emotions surrounding relationship disputes can escalate into irreversible tragedy.
What began as a routine attempt to return belongings to a former partner ultimately resulted in the death of a 17-year-old and a life sentence for another teenager.
With the sentencing now complete, authorities hope the conclusion of the criminal case provides some measure of closure to Walker’s family, even as they continue to cope with the loss of a young man whose future was taken away far too soon.
