A Lawrence, Massachusetts police officer was critically injured after being dragged for about two blocks by a vehicle that allegedly tried to flee during a traffic stop Tuesday night. The officer, identified as 27-year-old Ariel Cruz, was rushed to a Boston hospital after the violent encounter.

Traffic Stop Quickly Turns Into Dangerous Situation

Police said the incident began around 7:40 p.m. near East Haverhill and Kendall streets in Lawrence. Officers had stopped a vehicle and were attempting to take the driver into custody. Investigators said the driver had a revoked license, while a passenger in the vehicle was wanted on two active arrest warrants.

According to police, the situation escalated when the passenger allegedly moved into the driver’s seat and attempted to drive away from the scene.

Officer Caught in Vehicle as Car Speeds Away

Authorities said Officer Cruz tried to stop the vehicle from leaving but became caught up with the car as it accelerated. The officer was dragged approximately two blocks before separating from the vehicle.

Surveillance video reportedly captured the officer being pulled along the roadway before hitting a parked vehicle. Emergency crews responded quickly and transported him by medical helicopter for treatment.

Police Say Officer Is Critical but Communicating

Officials said Cruz was in critical but stable condition following the incident. Police later reported that he was conscious and able to communicate with family members and friends.

The department said Cruz joined the Lawrence Police Department in October 2025 and had quickly become known for his dedication and commitment to the community.

Suspect Captured After Vehicle Found Abandoned

Police located the vehicle involved in the incident later that night, but the person accused of driving away was not inside. Investigators identified the suspect as 34-year-old Hector Rivera, who was captured the following morning in Plaistow, New Hampshire.

Rivera is facing multiple charges, including allegations related to assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and failing to stop for police.

Community Rallies Behind Injured Officer

The incident has drawn support from fellow officers and community members as investigators continue reviewing what happened during the traffic stop.

Law enforcement officials said the case highlights the dangers officers face during routine encounters and promised to continue pursuing accountability in the investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue gathering evidence and preparing the case.
