Kittitas County deputy arrested on felony gun charges after dispute at The Brick Saloon

A Kittitas County Sheriff’s deputy has been arrested and charged with multiple felony offenses after authorities say he brandished a firearm during a confrontation outside a popular historic saloon in Roslyn.

The incident, which occurred in the early morning hours at The Brick Saloon, has prompted both a criminal investigation and an internal review by the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office. Prosecutors allege that Deputy Tyler Sholes, a veteran law enforcement officer, unlawfully displayed and pointed a handgun during an altercation that unfolded after a night out in the downtown area.

Dispute Erupts Outside Popular Roslyn Landmark

According to court documents, the incident occurred shortly after midnight outside The Brick Saloon, one of Washington state’s oldest operating bars and a well-known gathering spot in the small mountain community.

Investigators say a disagreement began between several individuals near the establishment and quickly escalated. Witnesses told authorities that tensions increased as the parties exchanged words outside the business.

During the confrontation, prosecutors allege that Sholes produced a handgun and pointed it toward another individual involved in the dispute. Witnesses reportedly described the action as threatening and immediately contacted law enforcement.

Multiple Agencies Respond

Because the suspect was an active law enforcement officer, outside agencies were brought in to investigate the incident.

The Washington State Patrol and other authorities assisted in gathering witness statements, reviewing evidence, and determining what occurred during the confrontation. Investigators interviewed multiple people who were present at the scene and collected surveillance footage from nearby locations.

Court records indicate that authorities concluded there was sufficient evidence to support felony charges related to the alleged use of the firearm.

Deputy Booked on Felony Charges

Following the investigation, Sholes was arrested and booked into custody.

Prosecutors charged him with felony offenses connected to the alleged unlawful display and handling of a firearm during the dispute. Court documents allege that his actions created fear among those present and exceeded what would be considered lawful self-defense under the circumstances.

The deputy later appeared before a judge, where conditions of release and future court dates were discussed.

As with all criminal cases, Sholes is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Sheriff’s Office Responds

The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the arrest and confirmed that the deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings and an internal investigation.

Sheriff’s officials emphasized that law enforcement personnel are expected to follow the same laws they are sworn to enforce and stated that allegations involving deputies are taken seriously.

The agency has pledged to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation and review process.

Community Reaction

News of the arrest has drawn significant attention throughout Kittitas County, where many residents are familiar with both the deputy and The Brick Saloon, a landmark business that has operated for more than a century.

Some community members expressed surprise at the allegations, while others emphasized the importance of accountability regardless of an individual’s profession. The case has sparked discussion about firearm responsibility, off-duty conduct by law enforcement officers, and public trust in local institutions.

Legal Proceedings Ahead

The criminal case is expected to move through the court system in the coming months as prosecutors present evidence and defense attorneys challenge the allegations.

Investigators have not indicated whether additional charges could be filed as the case progresses. Authorities continue reviewing witness accounts, surveillance footage, and other evidence gathered during the investigation.

For now, the deputy remains on administrative leave while both the criminal and internal investigations continue.

The case serves as a reminder that allegations involving public officials often receive heightened scrutiny, particularly when they involve firearms and public safety concerns. Court proceedings are expected to provide additional details about what occurred outside The Brick Saloon and whether prosecutors can prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
