Delmar woman receives maximum sentence for deadly wrong-way crash

A Delmar, New York woman has been sentenced to the maximum prison term permitted under state law after pleading guilty in connection with a fatal wrong-way crash that claimed the life of a young New Hampshire man on the New York State Thruway. The case drew significant attention across New York due to the devastating circumstances surrounding the collision and the loss of a 25-year-old man who was preparing to be married later that year.

Details of the Fatal Crash

Wrong-Way Collision on Interstate 90

According to investigators, the crash occurred on February 20, 2025, at approximately 8:44 p.m. on Interstate 90 in the Town of Mohawk, Montgomery County, New York. Authorities determined that Veronica Armbruster, a Delmar resident, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Thruway when her vehicle collided head-on with another car.

The other vehicle was being driven by Cole M. Sevigny of Hudson, New Hampshire. Sevigny was traveling legally in the westbound lanes when the collision occurred. The impact was severe, leaving both vehicles heavily damaged and trapping both drivers inside. Emergency responders had to extricate both motorists from their vehicles.

Victim Dies from Injuries

Following the crash, both drivers were transported to hospitals for treatment. Sevigny suffered catastrophic injuries and was later pronounced dead. Armbruster sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized in critical but stable condition following the collision.

The investigation forced authorities to shut down westbound lanes of the Thruway between exits 27 and 28 for several hours while reconstruction teams documented the scene and gathered evidence.

Investigation Revealed Alcohol Impairment

Blood Alcohol Content Twice the Legal Limit

State Police investigators determined that Armbruster had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16% at the time of the crash. The legal limit for drivers in New York is 0.08%, meaning her BAC was approximately twice the legal threshold.

Authorities concluded that Armbruster’s intoxication played a central role in the deadly crash. Following months of investigation and accident reconstruction, prosecutors moved forward with multiple criminal charges related to the incident.

Criminal Charges Filed

On May 9, 2025, New York State Police announced that Armbruster had been arrested and charged with several offenses, including second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, and additional vehicle and traffic law violations.

Police said Armbruster voluntarily surrendered herself at the State Police barracks in Fonda, where she was processed and formally charged. She was later arraigned and remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

Guilty Plea and Court Proceedings

Plea Agreement Reached

In April 2026, Armbruster pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular manslaughter, a Class D felony under New York law. The plea agreement called for the maximum sentence permitted for the offense. Prosecutors stated that the agreement reflected the seriousness of the conduct and the irreversible loss suffered by the victim’s family.

As part of the proceedings, the court also moved toward revoking Armbruster’s driving privileges. The plea eliminated the need for a lengthy trial while ensuring a prison sentence upon conviction.

Judge Orders Maximum Sentence

On June 4, 2026, Armbruster appeared in Montgomery County Court for sentencing. The court imposed the maximum prison sentence available for the conviction, ordering her to serve between approximately 2⅓ or 2½ years and 7 years in state prison. Prosecutors described the sentence as the strongest punishment available under the applicable law.

The sentencing marked the final chapter in a criminal case that began with the fatal collision more than a year earlier.

Remembering Cole Sevigny

Young Man With a Bright Future

Cole Sevigny was just 25 years old when he lost his life in the crash. Family members and friends described him as a hardworking and beloved young man with an exciting future ahead of him. He worked alongside his father in the family business, DC ATM Systems, and had become an important part of the company.

Wedding Planned for Later That Year

Perhaps the most heartbreaking detail highlighted throughout the case was that Sevigny had been engaged and was planning to marry in August 2025. Prosecutors referenced this fact during court proceedings, noting that his life was cut short only months before his wedding day.

His death left family members, friends, and his fiancée grieving a loss that prosecutors described as unimaginable.

Prosecutors Emphasize Consequences of Impaired Driving

District Attorney Issues Statement

Montgomery County District Attorney Cristina Pearson said the case serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers associated with impaired driving. Following the sentencing, Pearson expressed sympathy for Sevigny’s family and emphasized that no court outcome could restore the life that was lost.

Prosecutors noted that drunk-driving crashes continue to have devastating effects on victims, families, and communities, and they urged motorists to make responsible decisions before getting behind the wheel.

Background of the Defendant

Medical Professional Before Arrest

Before the crash, Armbruster worked as a nurse practitioner in the Capital Region. Reports indicated that she had been employed in pediatric healthcare prior to the fatal collision. The criminal case and subsequent conviction brought an abrupt end to a professional career that had involved caring for patients and families.

Lasting Impact of the Case

The fatal wrong-way crash remains one of the region’s most tragic drunk-driving incidents in recent years. Investigators concluded that alcohol impairment and driving in the wrong direction on a major interstate directly led to the death of a young man whose future included marriage and continued work in his family’s business. The maximum sentence imposed by the court reflects the severity of the offense, but officials acknowledged that no punishment can fully compensate for the loss experienced by Cole Sevigny’s loved ones.
