Woman says she forced younger brother to kneel on rice for hours and refused to let him use the bathroom because he was misbehaving: Police say
A Florida woman has been arrested on child abuse charges after police say she forced her younger brother to kneel on rice inside a shed for several hours as punishment and denied him access to a bathroom.
According to the Florida City Police Department, the case came to light on June 10, 2026, when the boy sought help from a neighbor, telling them that he “couldn’t take it anymore.” Authorities say the child had been subjected to a harsh disciplinary practice that left visible injuries on his knees.
Child Reportedly Sought Help From Neighbor
Police said the incident was discovered shortly before 4:45 p.m. when the child went to a nearby residence seeking assistance.
According to investigators, the boy told the neighbor that he had been kneeling on rice since approximately 11 a.m. that morning. He also reportedly stated that this was not the first time he had been punished in such a manner when he was accused of misbehaving.
The child’s statements prompted an immediate police response and an investigation into the conditions under which he had been living.
Boy Allegedly Forced to Kneel for Hours
Investigators said the boy described being ordered to kneel on rice inside a shed for several hours.
Police reports indicate that kneeling on uncooked rice can cause significant pain and discomfort, particularly when sustained over long periods. When officers examined the child, they reportedly observed injuries that appeared consistent with prolonged kneeling on rice.
According to the arrest report, an officer documented visible injuries to the child’s knees and noted that the marks appeared to match the account given by the boy.
Child Says He Was Denied Bathroom Access
The allegations became even more concerning when the boy told officers that he had attempted to go inside the house to use the restroom while being punished.
According to police, the child reported that his sister refused to allow him back into the home, effectively preventing him from using the bathroom during the punishment period.
An officer wrote in the report that the child specifically stated he was not permitted to enter the house despite requesting to use the restroom. The officer also noted that the physical injuries observed were consistent with the punishment described.
Sister Was Reportedly Acting as Guardian
Police identified the suspect as 26-year-old Nataly Francelia Cruz.
According to investigators, Cruz had been caring for her younger brother after their mother was deported. As a result, she had reportedly assumed responsibility for supervising and raising the child.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the boy’s age, but investigators treated the matter as a child abuse case due to the nature of the alleged punishment and the injuries observed.
Statement to Police Redacted
Police reports indicate that Cruz provided a statement to investigators following the allegations.
However, the statement was redacted from the publicly released version of the report, meaning the exact explanation she gave authorities has not been made public.
As a result, details regarding her defense or justification for the punishment remain unavailable.
Arrest and Criminal Charges
Following the investigation, Florida City police arrested Cruz on a charge of child abuse.
Authorities transported her to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where she was booked into custody. As of the morning following her arrest, she remained incarcerated with a bond set at $2,500.
The criminal case is expected to proceed through the Miami-Dade County court system.
Immigration Hold Also Placed on Suspect
In addition to the child abuse charge, authorities reported that Cruz, a Honduran national, was also being held under an immigration detainer.
An immigration hold generally means federal immigration authorities have requested notification or custody consideration should the individual become eligible for release from local custody.
Investigation Continues
The Florida City Police Department has not announced whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Authorities have not released further information about the child’s current living arrangements or whether child welfare agencies have become involved in the case.
For now, investigators say the child’s decision to seek help from a neighbor ultimately brought the alleged abuse to light and led to the arrest of the woman who had been serving as his guardian.
