Parents forced 10-year-old daughter to sleep on piece of plywood on bathtub until she died when teen brother set fire to home to escape horrific abuse

A Georgia couple has been sentenced in connection with years of abuse inflicted on their children, a case that culminated in the tragic death of 10-year-old Zowey McCue during a house fire in 2022. Prosecutors described a household marked by extreme cruelty, isolation, and neglect, where children were subjected to physical abuse, degrading punishments, and severe living conditions.

The case drew widespread attention after authorities revealed that Zowey had been forced to sleep on a piece of plywood placed over a bathtub inside a windowless bathroom that had effectively become her bedroom. When a fire broke out at the family’s home, she became trapped inside and died from smoke inhalation.

Jury Delivers Multiple Guilty Verdicts Against Father

William McCue Receives Multiple Life Sentences

William McCue, 51, was convicted on numerous charges connected to the abuse and death of his daughter. According to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office, a jury found him guilty of felony murder, two counts of rape, two counts of incest, and three counts of aggravated child molestation.

Following the verdict, the court sentenced him to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, along with an additional life sentence and 120 years in prison. Jurors reportedly reached their decision after approximately four hours of deliberation.

Mother Pleaded Guilty and Testified

Carina McCue, 42, entered guilty pleas to three counts of first-degree cruelty to children, aggravated assault, and false imprisonment. As part of the proceedings, she testified against her husband during his trial. The court sentenced her to 90 years in prison.

The Fire That Claimed Zowey McCue’s Life

House Fire Broke Out in April 2022

The fatal incident occurred on April 17, 2022, at the family’s home in Loganville, Georgia, located northeast of Atlanta. When the fire erupted, Carina McCue managed to escape with two of her sons, who were then 12 and 8 years old.

However, Zowey could not be rescued. Prosecutors said she was trapped inside the windowless bathroom where she had been forced to sleep. The room served as her bedroom, leaving her with no viable escape route when the flames and smoke spread through the home. She ultimately died from smoke inhalation.

Father Was Not Home During the Blaze

Authorities stated that William McCue was not at the residence when the fire started. Investigators later uncovered information that dramatically changed the course of the case and exposed years of alleged abuse inside the home.

Teen Brother Admitted Starting the Fire

Desperate Attempt to Escape Abuse

One of the most shocking revelations during the proceedings came from the couple’s oldest son. The teenager, who was 15 years old at the time of the fire, testified that he intentionally set the blaze as a means of escaping the abuse he and his siblings had endured for years.

His testimony painted a disturbing picture of life inside the household and became a significant part of the prosecution’s case against the parents.

Horrific Conditions Described in Court

Children Allegedly Beaten and Subjected to Extreme Punishments

According to testimony presented during the trial, the children experienced repeated physical abuse and harsh punishments. Prosecutors said they were beaten and forced to wear shock collars. Witnesses also described punishments that required the children to stand naked on cinder blocks for extended periods, sometimes lasting hours or even days.

Forced to Use Buckets Instead of Toilets

Court testimony further revealed that the children allegedly were not permitted to use household toilets. Instead, they were forced to use buckets purchased from a home improvement store, which prosecutors said were emptied only once per week.

The allegations contributed to a broader picture of neglect and mistreatment that prosecutors argued deprived the children of even the most basic necessities.

No Formal Education

Authorities also stated that the children were never enrolled in school and were not homeschooled. As a result, investigators found that they were significantly behind their peers developmentally and educationally.

Prosecutors noted that after being removed from the household, the children began to thrive despite facing substantial educational and developmental challenges caused by years of isolation.

Sexual Abuse Allegations Emerged During Trial

Mother Testified About Husband’s Admission

Another major component of the case involved allegations of sexual abuse. During her testimony, Carina McCue stated that William McCue admitted to her that he had sexually assaulted their oldest daughter for years. The daughter was reportedly 17 years old at the time the abuse came to light.

Those allegations were reflected in several of the convictions returned by the jury.

Prosecutors Condemn Treatment of Children

District Attorney Calls Death Preventable

Following the convictions, Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson issued a statement condemning the treatment of the children and emphasizing that Zowey’s death could have been prevented.

According to the district attorney, the abuse suffered by the children was horrific and unacceptable. Officials stated that all of the children deserved protection, care, and opportunities that they never received while living in the household.

Remembering Zowey McCue

A Child Remembered for Her Kindness

Zowey’s death was made even more heartbreaking by the details contained in her obituary. The 10-year-old died only three days after celebrating her birthday.

Family members described her as a loving child who enjoyed playing with Legos, coloring, drawing, riding her bicycle, swimming, jumping on a trampoline, and spending time outdoors. They remembered her as a curious young girl who loved learning and helping others whenever she could.

Those who knew her also recalled her bright smile and generous nature, characteristics that stood in stark contrast to the suffering described during the criminal proceedings.

A Case That Highlighted Severe Child Abuse

The McCue case stands as one of the most disturbing child abuse prosecutions in recent Georgia history. Court testimony revealed allegations of prolonged physical abuse, neglect, isolation, and sexual exploitation that affected multiple children within the household. Prosecutors argued that the conditions ultimately contributed to the death of 10-year-old Zowey McCue, whose inability to escape a house fire was linked to the confinement and living arrangements imposed upon her.

With the convictions and lengthy prison sentences now imposed, authorities say the case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of child abuse and the importance of protecting vulnerable children from dangerous and abusive environments.
