A California family’s routine evening outing turned into a devastating tragedy when a mother of three was struck and killed by a stray bullet during a gang-related shooting in Santa Ana. More than three years after the incident, authorities continue searching for additional suspects believed to have been involved in the deadly attack.

Tragic Shooting Outside Santa Ana Pizzeria

On Dec. 4, 2022, 43-year-old Maria Del Refugio Mora was on her way to meet her husband and their 3-year-old son for dinner at a pizzeria located along South Main Street in Santa Ana, California. The family had planned a simple evening meal together, but the outing ended in horror when gunfire erupted in the parking lot.

According to investigators, the shooting occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. As Mora walked toward her husband and child, a suspect exited a white Toyota Camry and opened fire on two teenagers who were standing in the parking area.

Innocent Bystander Struck by Gunfire

Police said the gunman was targeting the two teens, who were not injured during the attack. However, one of the bullets struck Mora in the upper torso.

Authorities described the incident as a gang-related shooting in which Mora was not the intended target. Instead, she became an innocent victim caught in the crossfire.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported Mora to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save her life, she succumbed to her injuries five days later.

Husband Witnessed the Horrific Moment

The tragedy unfolded directly in front of Mora’s husband and their young son.

According to interviews given by her husband, he had just made eye contact with his wife as she approached the restaurant parking lot. He recalled that she smiled at him moments before gunshots rang out.

The sudden violence transformed what should have been a family dinner into a life-altering nightmare.

Family Left Devastated

Mora was the mother of three children. At the time of her death, her children ranged in age from 3 to 15 years old.

Her husband later expressed profound grief and anger over the senseless killing, stating that he wanted everyone responsible to be held fully accountable.

The emotional impact on the family has been immeasurable, particularly for the children who lost their mother in such a violent and public manner.

Investigation Leads to Arrests

Santa Ana police launched an intensive investigation following the shooting.

Nearly two weeks after Mora was killed, authorities announced the arrests of two suspects connected to the case.

Alleged Shooter Identified

Police arrested 19-year-old Mark Remmers on suspicion of murder. Investigators identified him as the alleged gunman who fired the shots that ultimately killed Mora.

Authorities allege that Remmers exited the vehicle and opened fire at the intended targets in the parking lot.

Getaway Driver Also Charged

Investigators also arrested 24-year-old Brooke De La Cruz, who was accused of serving as the getaway driver.

Both suspects were charged in connection with Mora’s death.

Police Believe Additional Suspects Remain at Large

Although two arrests were made, investigators believe the case is not fully solved.

At Least Two More Individuals Sought

According to police, there were at least two additional people inside the white Toyota Camry during the shooting.

Authorities have stated that these individuals have not yet been located and remain subjects of the ongoing investigation.

Law enforcement officials continue seeking information that could help identify and apprehend the remaining suspects.

Police Chief Condemns Violence

At the time of the arrests, Santa Ana Police Chief David Valentin publicly addressed the tragedy and condemned the gang-related violence that led to Mora’s death.

He described the killing of an innocent mother as an unacceptable act that should never occur in any community.

Valentin also extended condolences to Mora’s family, particularly her children, noting that they would be forced to spend every future holiday without their mother because of the actions of those involved in the shooting.

Remembering Maria Del Refugio Mora

Friends and loved ones remembered Mora as a devoted wife and mother who cared deeply for her family.

Loved Ones Mourn a Dedicated Mother

A fundraising page established following her death described her as a loving wife and mother who adored her children.

Supporters emphasized that she was an innocent woman whose life was taken while simply trying to enjoy dinner with her family.

The tragedy resonated throughout the community, serving as another painful reminder of the dangers posed by gang-related violence and stray bullets.

Ongoing Appeal for Information

Despite years passing since the shooting, investigators continue to pursue leads related to the case.

Authorities encourage anyone with information regarding the homicide or the unidentified suspects to contact the Santa Ana Police Department’s Homicide Section. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Orange County Crime Stoppers.

As the investigation continues, Mora’s family remains focused on seeking justice for a mother whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence while her husband and young son watched helplessly.
