Man tells cop ‘this is your unlucky day’ before plunging butcher knife into his back
A routine emergency response in Ohio turned into a life-or-death struggle when a Butler County Sheriff’s deputy was allegedly ambushed and stabbed in the back by a man who reportedly told him, “This is your unlucky day,” moments before launching the attack.
The shocking incident occurred on February 5, 2026, in Madison Township, Butler County, Ohio, and resulted in the arrest of 41-year-old Phillip Brandon Lovely. Authorities later accused him of attempting to murder veteran Deputy Mike Farthing after allegedly setting a vehicle on fire.
Deputy Responds to Vehicle Fire Call
According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Mike Farthing was dispatched to a reported vehicle fire on Myers Road at approximately 12:45 p.m.
When Farthing arrived at the property, he discovered a vehicle fully engulfed in flames near a residence. At the time, he was the only law enforcement officer on the scene and immediately called for assistance from fire crews and emergency responders.
Investigators later alleged that the burning vehicle had been intentionally set on fire by Phillip Lovely.
“This Is Your Unlucky Day”
While Farthing was handling the emergency response and coordinating traffic around the fire scene, authorities say Lovely approached him unexpectedly.
Sheriff Richard Jones said the suspect allegedly told the deputy, “This is your unlucky day,” before attacking him with a large knife.
The weapon was described by investigators as a butcher knife with an approximately 8- to 10-inch blade attached to a knife measuring around 12 inches in total length.
According to authorities, the blade penetrated Farthing’s ballistic vest and stabbed him in the back.
Sheriff Jones later emphasized that while bulletproof vests are designed to stop bullets, they do not necessarily protect against knife attacks.
Deputy Fights for His Life
Despite suffering a serious stab wound, Farthing immediately fought back.
Authorities said the deputy radioed dispatch to report that he had been stabbed while simultaneously struggling with the attacker.
The confrontation quickly became physical, with both men wrestling and eventually falling into the snow.
Sheriff Jones described the encounter as a fight for survival.
Farthing ultimately managed to separate himself from the suspect and draw his weapon, holding Lovely at gunpoint despite his injuries.
The sheriff said the deputy remained calm and maintained control of the dangerous situation until additional help arrived.
Suspect’s Uncle Helps End Standoff
Even after the struggle ended, Lovely reportedly continued holding the knife.
Authorities said the suspect’s uncle, who was present at the scene, played a key role in bringing the confrontation to a close.
The uncle reportedly spoke with Lovely and convinced him to drop the weapon.
Once the knife was surrendered, responding officers were able to take Lovely into custody without further violence.
Emergency Medical Response
Due to the severity of the deputy’s injuries, emergency crews initially considered transporting him by medical helicopter.
However, weather conditions prevented air transport.
Instead, Farthing was rushed by ambulance to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown for treatment.
Sheriff Jones later reported that the deputy was conscious, breathing, and able to speak with investigators from his hospital room.
Medical personnel reportedly believed the knife may have nicked part of Farthing’s lung, though the injuries were ultimately determined to be non-life-threatening.
Veteran Deputy Survives Attack
Farthing’s survival was viewed by many as remarkable given the nature of the attack.
The deputy has more than two decades of law enforcement experience and has also worked as an Advanced EMT for many years.
Officials said his quick actions, training, and determination likely prevented the incident from becoming fatal.
Sheriff Jones visited Farthing at the hospital shortly after the stabbing and praised the deputy’s courage.
The sheriff stated that law enforcement officers face dangerous situations every day and that the attack served as a reminder of the risks officers encounter while performing routine duties.
Investigation Reveals Alleged Motive
As investigators examined the circumstances leading up to the stabbing, court records revealed additional details about the events that allegedly triggered the violence.
Authorities said Lovely intentionally set fire to a vehicle belonging to his former girlfriend.
According to court documents, the vehicle was allegedly burned in retaliation following the end of their relationship.
Deputy Farthing was responding to that suspected arson when the stabbing occurred.
Investigators believe the attack on the deputy happened after Lovely realized law enforcement had arrived at the scene.
Criminal Charges Filed
Following treatment at the hospital, Lovely was booked into the Middletown City Jail.
Prosecutors initially charged him with:
Attempted Aggravated Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer
Authorities alleged that the stabbing was a deliberate attempt to kill Deputy Farthing.
Felonious Assault
Investigators accused Lovely of knowingly causing serious physical harm with a deadly weapon.
Arson
The charge stemmed from allegations that he intentionally set fire to his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle.
Additional Charges
A Butler County grand jury later returned an indictment that included multiple counts, including attempted aggravated murder, felonious assault, arson, and inducing panic.
Prosecutor Vows Aggressive Prosecution
Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser publicly condemned the attack and pledged to pursue the case aggressively.
He stated that Lovely would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and said he intended to “throw the book” at the defendant.
Officials repeatedly characterized the stabbing as an attempt to kill a law enforcement officer.
Sheriff Jones also stated that the suspect “tried to kill my deputy.”
Guilty Plea Entered
On April 22, 2026, court proceedings took a major turn when Phillip Lovely entered a guilty plea.
According to court records, he pleaded guilty to:
Attempted Aggravated Murder
The plea acknowledged responsibility for the stabbing attack on Deputy Farthing.
Arson
Lovely also admitted responsibility for setting the vehicle on fire.
As part of the plea agreement, several other charges were dismissed.
Deputy Speaks About the Attack
After the guilty plea, Deputy Farthing publicly discussed the ordeal.
He recalled being approached from behind and suddenly feeling the impact of the knife.
Farthing said that after realizing he had been stabbed and seeing the suspect still holding the weapon, he immediately understood that the threat remained active.
The veteran deputy credited his training and instincts for helping him survive the encounter.
He also indicated that he believed he was fortunate to be alive, noting that the knife could have caused far more severe injuries had it penetrated deeper.
Sentencing and Possible Penalties
Court records indicated that the attempted aggravated murder conviction carried a potential prison sentence ranging from several years to more than a decade.
The arson conviction also carried additional prison exposure.
Lovely was scheduled for sentencing in Butler County court following his guilty plea.
Community Reaction
The attack generated widespread concern throughout Butler County and among law enforcement agencies across Ohio.
Community members, fellow deputies, firefighters, and emergency responders expressed support for Farthing during his recovery.
Officials repeatedly praised his professionalism and courage, noting that he maintained control of a deadly situation despite suffering a serious stab wound.
The case remains one of the most dramatic attacks on a law enforcement officer in Butler County in recent years, highlighting how quickly a routine emergency call can turn into a violent confrontation.
