Man kicked 3-year-old daughter with steel-toed boots and abused her into brain damage while his girlfriend stood by and did nothing: Authorities
A Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to prison after authorities determined that she failed to protect her boyfriend’s 3-year-old daughter from prolonged and severe abuse that ultimately left the child with permanent brain damage. Prosecutors said the woman not only failed to report the abuse but also neglected to seek medical attention for the young girl despite clear signs of serious injuries and mistreatment.
The case centers on 26-year-old Alyssa Kithcart and her boyfriend, 27-year-old Dalton Sweat, of Bradford County, Pennsylvania. According to court records, Kithcart recently pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child and was sentenced to three months in prison followed by three years of probation. Additional charges, including another count of child endangerment and recklessly endangering another person, were dismissed as part of the proceedings.
Emergency Call Led to Discovery of Abuse
Authorities said the investigation began on May 20, 2025, when police officers and paramedics were dispatched to a residence on East Frederick Street in Athens, Pennsylvania, following a report that a toddler had suffered a head injury after a fall.
When first responders arrived at the home, they found the 3-year-old girl unconscious but still breathing. According to Athens Police Chief Carla Dieg, the child was lying on the floor with her eyes barely open. Officers also observed that the girl appeared extremely thin and had soiled herself, raising immediate concerns about her overall condition and well-being.
The child was rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to another medical facility for advanced treatment.
Initial Explanation Did Not Match Injuries
During the early stages of the investigation, Dalton Sweat reportedly told officers that he had been on his way to work when Kithcart contacted him and informed him that his daughter had fallen. Kithcart allegedly told police that the girl had climbed onto a coat rack and then fallen to the floor.
Medical professionals quickly became suspicious of that explanation. Doctors treating the child informed investigators that her injuries were inconsistent with a simple fall from a coat rack. Their findings revealed evidence of extensive trauma that suggested a pattern of abuse rather than an accident.
Doctors Found Multiple Serious Injuries
According to investigators, medical examinations uncovered a broken collarbone, bruises covering various parts of the child’s body, and signs of severe malnourishment. These injuries indicated that the toddler had endured significant physical abuse over an extended period.
As detectives continued questioning the couple, additional details began to emerge. Authorities said Kithcart eventually acknowledged that Sweat was excessively harsh in disciplining the child and admitted that she should have reported his behavior sooner.
Family Members Revealed Pattern of Violence
Investigators also interviewed relatives and other individuals familiar with the family. According to reports, family members described multiple incidents of abuse involving the child. One particularly disturbing allegation stated that Sweat had kicked the toddler with steel-toed boots, causing her to slam into a wall and suffer a bloody nose.
Witnesses also described additional forms of punishment. Other children living in the home reportedly told investigators that Sweat struck the girl with a belt and forced her to remain in “time-out” for extended periods lasting several hours.
These accounts helped investigators build a picture of ongoing abuse that had allegedly been occurring long before emergency responders were called to the residence.
Suspect and Girlfriend Gave Conflicting Accounts
Authorities said Sweat initially attempted to shift responsibility onto Kithcart. According to investigators, he claimed he was afraid of Kithcart’s family. However, police reported that he later admitted he had been harsher with the child than he originally acknowledged.
Meanwhile, Kithcart admitted she was aware of the harsh treatment but failed to take action to stop it or alert authorities. Prosecutors argued that her inaction allowed the abuse to continue and deprived the child of timely medical intervention.
Child Suffered Permanent Brain Damage
Perhaps the most heartbreaking aspect of the case emerged from the medical assessments conducted after the toddler was hospitalized. Healthcare professionals informed investigators that the girl’s brain had suffered irreversible damage. Doctors concluded that she would never fully recover from her injuries.
The long-term consequences of the abuse are expected to affect the child for the rest of her life, making the case one of the most severe child abuse investigations handled in the region in recent years.
Girlfriend Receives Sentence
Following her guilty plea, Kithcart was sentenced to three months behind bars and three years of probation. Court records show that she is currently being held at the Bradford County Correctional Facility.
Prosecutors maintained that while Kithcart may not have inflicted the injuries herself, her failure to report the abuse or obtain medical care for the child played a significant role in allowing the situation to continue.
Criminal Case Against Father Continues
Dalton Sweat remains incarcerated as his criminal case moves through the court system. He faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities continue to pursue prosecution based on the extensive evidence gathered during the investigation.
Court records indicate that Sweat’s case has not yet been resolved, and further proceedings are expected as prosecutors seek accountability for the injuries suffered by the young girl. A pretrial conference in his case was scheduled for June 23.
A Case That Shocked the Community
The case drew widespread attention because of the severity of the allegations and the devastating injuries sustained by the toddler. Investigators described a child who was not only physically abused but also neglected and left without protection by the adults responsible for her care.
Authorities say the investigation ultimately revealed a prolonged pattern of violence, malnourishment, and neglect that culminated in life-altering injuries for the young victim. As criminal proceedings continue against Sweat, the case remains a stark reminder of the importance of reporting suspected child abuse and intervening when vulnerable children are in danger.
