A California man is accused of carrying out a horrific attack on his estranged wife before allegedly recording videos and taking photographs as she lay mortally wounded on the floor, according to court documents and prosecutors.

Authorities say 55-year-old Shede Mao of San Jose, California, fatally attacked his 49-year-old estranged wife with a machete and dumbbells after months of escalating marital conflict stemming from her desire to end their marriage. Prosecutors allege that after the assault, Mao used his cellphone to document the victim’s final moments instead of seeking immediate medical help.

Divorce Dispute Allegedly Led to Escalating Tensions

According to court records cited by prosecutors, tensions between Mao and his wife had been building for several months. The victim had informed Mao earlier in 2026 that she wanted a divorce, a decision that allegedly intensified ongoing disputes between the couple. Authorities say the relationship continued to deteriorate as arguments became more frequent.

Investigators believe the fatal violence was the culmination of those ongoing conflicts. Prosecutors stated that the victim had repeatedly argued with Mao about ending their marriage, and evidence gathered during the investigation suggested that the couple’s separation was a central issue in the case.

Witness Described Heated Argument Before the Killing

Court documents reveal that a roommate and coworker witnessed a heated confrontation between the couple on the evening of June 14. The witness reportedly observed Mao and the victim arguing aggressively at a local shopping center.

According to investigators, the witness described the pair as being face-to-face during the confrontation, indicating that emotions were running high in the hours leading up to the deadly attack. Prosecutors later pointed to this altercation as part of the timeline that preceded the killing.

Victim Reached Out for Help During the Attack

One of the most chilling aspects of the case involves the victim’s alleged attempts to seek help after she had already been injured.

Authorities say that around 12:45 a.m. on June 15, the victim contacted a female friend through calls and text messages. During those communications, the friend reportedly received a photograph showing the victim lying on the ground covered in blood and suffering from visible injuries. Investigators also said the victim sent a location pin, apparently attempting to reveal where she was located.

The friend immediately became concerned and repeatedly called both the victim’s phone and Mao’s phone. According to court documents, Mao eventually answered one of those calls and allegedly instructed the friend to contact emergency services.

Friend Reportedly Heard Victim Pleading for Assistance

Court records indicate that while speaking with Mao on the phone, the friend could hear the injured woman in the background.

Investigators said the friend reported hearing the victim say “Help” as she struggled after the attack. The victim allegedly referred to Mao as her husband and requested something to drink.

According to the documents, Mao allegedly responded by saying that he was not her husband. Prosecutors included those statements as part of the evidence detailing the victim’s final interactions before her death.

Police Arrived to Find a Blood-Spattered Crime Scene

When San Jose police officers arrived at the residence, they encountered a gruesome scene.

According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, officers discovered the victim dead inside a room covered in blood. Authorities reported that Mao walked outside as police arrived and was allegedly covered in blood while holding a cellphone.

Investigators documented extensive blood evidence throughout the room. Court records state that blood was found on the bedroom door, adjoining walls, carpeting, and even on a ceiling light fixture. The widespread bloodstains suggested an exceptionally violent attack had occurred inside the residence.

Machete and Dumbbells Recovered at the Scene

During their search of the home, investigators discovered what they believe were the weapons used in the killing.

Police recovered a large machete with a blood-stained blade. Authorities also located two dumbbell free weights that allegedly contained blood evidence. Prosecutors contend that both the machete and the weights were used during the attack that ultimately killed the victim.

The discovery of multiple alleged weapons further underscored the brutality of the assault described in court filings.

Victim Suffered Severe Injuries

According to investigators, the victim sustained catastrophic injuries during the attack.

Police reported that she suffered significant trauma to her head and face. Authorities also documented severe cuts to her right hand and noted that one of her fingers had been severed. The injuries were consistent with a violent assault involving a bladed weapon, according to the evidence described in court records.

The extent of the wounds became a central part of the prosecution’s allegations against Mao as investigators reconstructed the final moments of the victim’s life.

Prosecutors Say Mao Recorded the Victim as She Died

Perhaps the most disturbing allegation in the case emerged during the forensic examination of Mao’s cellphone.

According to court documents, investigators found two photographs and two video recordings allegedly taken by Mao after the assault. Prosecutors say the images and videos showed the victim lying on the ground while she was bloodied, gravely injured, and still alive.

Authorities allege that rather than immediately seeking emergency medical treatment, Mao stood over the victim and recorded her as she struggled following the attack. Those recordings are expected to play a significant role in the prosecution’s case.

Murder Charge Filed Against Suspect

Following the investigation, Mao was charged with murder in Santa Clara County.

Prosecutors allege that he intentionally killed his estranged wife after months of conflict related to their impending divorce. The charge reflects the seriousness of the allegations and the evidence gathered from the crime scene, witness statements, electronic communications, and cellphone records.

Defendant Remains in Custody

Court records show that Mao is being held without bail as the criminal proceedings continue.

He is scheduled to appear in court for a plea hearing on July 30. Prosecutors are expected to present evidence including witness testimony, forensic findings, cellphone records, photographs, videos, and physical evidence recovered from the residence.

A Case Highlighting the Deadly Consequences of Domestic Violence

The allegations against Mao have drawn attention because of both the extreme violence involved and the claim that he documented the victim’s final moments after the attack.

Authorities say the victim had attempted to reach out for help in the final minutes of her life, sending messages and location information to a friend before police were called. Prosecutors contend that the evidence paints a tragic picture of a woman trying to escape a deteriorating relationship that ultimately turned deadly.

As the case moves through the court system, investigators and prosecutors will continue presenting evidence surrounding the fatal attack that allegedly occurred in San Jose, where a divorce dispute ended in one of the region’s most shocking domestic violence homicide cases of the year.
