Daughter locked up mother with dementia and Alzheimer’s, refused to change her dirty Pampers while draining the 77-year-old’s ‘entire’ life savings, cops say
A Florida woman is facing a growing list of criminal charges after authorities alleged that she not only neglected and abused her elderly mother suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease but also exploited her financially, draining what investigators described as the victim’s entire life savings. The disturbing case has drawn widespread attention due to the alleged mistreatment of the vulnerable 77-year-old woman and the extensive financial losses uncovered during the investigation.
Elderly Mother Found Living in Horrific Conditions
According to investigators in Hialeah, Florida, 49-year-old Janet Edwards was initially arrested in October 2025 after allegations surfaced that she had been neglecting her elderly mother, who was diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Authorities said the victim was discovered living in deplorable conditions inside the home she shared with her daughter.
Police documents stated that the elderly woman was found locked inside a bedroom. Investigators reported that the room had no electricity and that the victim was lying on an air mattress. Authorities further alleged that the bedroom door was locked from the outside, effectively preventing the woman from leaving on her own.
One of the most shocking allegations involved the victim being found with feces on her hands. According to the arrest affidavit, Edwards’ adult son opened the bedroom door during a visit and discovered his grandmother wearing a diaper and holding feces in both hands. He allegedly asked his mother to clean her, but she refused.
“She’s Going to Learn”
Investigators said Edwards justified her refusal to care for her mother by telling family members that the elderly woman needed to “learn” a lesson.
According to police records, when her son urged her to clean the victim after she had soiled herself, Edwards allegedly responded by saying, “She’s going to learn because she is always doing this.” Authorities noted that she refused to change her mother’s dirty Pampers despite her obvious need for assistance.
The affidavit further alleged that Edwards admitted seeing her mother with feces in her hands on at least five occasions and even observed her consuming it. Despite witnessing these incidents, police said she failed to provide appropriate care.
Grandchildren Reported Abuse and Neglect
The investigation gained momentum after Edwards’ own children came forward with allegations regarding their grandmother’s treatment.
Police said Edwards’ adult daughter reported multiple incidents of neglect and abuse to authorities. She was listed as a witness in several reported incidents occurring during 2025. Investigators said the daughter also supplied text messages she had received from Edwards that allegedly showed photographs of the elderly woman holding feces. According to the affidavit, Edwards allegedly wrote that she smelled feces and was simply going back to bed instead of helping her mother.
Authorities also received statements accusing Edwards of slapping her elderly mother and leaving her alone for extended periods. While Edwards denied physically abusing the victim, the allegations contributed to charges of battery on a person aged 65 or older.
Daughter Claimed Frustration as Reason for Her Actions
During questioning, Edwards acknowledged that her mother suffered from severe cognitive impairments caused by dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. She reportedly told investigators that her mother no longer recognized anyone and that she was the sole caregiver in the household.
When detectives asked why she failed to clean and care for her mother after the repeated incidents, Edwards allegedly said she was “upset or frustrated.” Authorities said she offered the same explanation when questioned about telling her son that the victim was “going to learn.”
Despite admitting frustration, Edwards denied allegations that she physically struck her mother.
Previous Family History Emerged During Investigation
Court documents revealed additional family concerns that investigators considered during the case.
According to police, Edwards’ son had previously been removed from her custody when he was 14 years old due to child abuse allegations that were investigated by the Florida Department of Children and Families. Authorities stated that his paternal grandparents were later granted custody.
While those past allegations are separate from the current case, investigators noted them in the arrest affidavit.
Financial Investigation Uncovered Alleged Exploitation
The case expanded significantly after authorities began examining the victim’s finances.
According to a June 2026 arrest warrant, detectives launched a financial investigation after Edwards’ daughter became the elderly woman’s court-appointed guardian and discovered suspicious banking activity. Investigators said bank statements revealed large withdrawals and electronic transfers beginning in 2023.
Authorities alleged that Edwards held power of attorney over her mother and used that position of trust to gain access to her finances.
Sale of Home Led to Major Transfers
Investigators said one of the most significant financial transactions involved the sale of the victim’s Hialeah home.
According to the arrest warrant, Edwards sold her mother’s residence in June 2024 and received more than $462,000 from the sale. Detectives alleged that over $250,000 of those proceeds were transferred into Edwards’ personal bank accounts.
Police further alleged that she spent more than $24,000 of her mother’s money to purchase a pickup truck.
Forged Signatures and Identity Theft Allegations
The financial investigation uncovered additional accusations involving insurance benefits.
Authorities alleged that Edwards forged her mother’s signature to obtain more than $15,000 in life insurance payouts. Investigators also accused her of impersonating her mother during telephone conversations with the insurance company in order to secure the funds.
Police concluded that Edwards allegedly exploited her mother’s advanced age, severe cognitive impairment, and dependence in order to gain financial benefits for herself. Investigators stated that she used fraud and identity theft to permanently deprive the victim of her savings.
Additional Criminal Charges Filed
As a result of the financial investigation, Edwards was arrested again and charged with several additional felonies.
Authorities said the new charges include:
Elder Exploitation
Investigators allege that Edwards used her position as caregiver and power-of-attorney holder to take advantage of her vulnerable mother for personal financial gain.
Grand Theft From a Person Over 65
Police accused Edwards of unlawfully taking substantial sums of money belonging to her elderly mother.
Organized Scheme to Defraud
Authorities contend that the alleged transfers, forged documents, and financial transactions formed part of a broader fraudulent scheme.
Identity Theft
Investigators said Edwards impersonated her mother and forged signatures to access insurance funds and other assets.
Court Proceedings and Current Status
Following her initial October 2025 arrest, Edwards was ordered to stay away from her mother and the residence. At that time, the elderly woman was placed under medical observation while authorities continued their investigation.
After the financial crimes were uncovered, Edwards was arrested again in June 2026. Authorities reported that she was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $55,000 bond while facing the newly added charges.
A Case That Shocked Investigators
The allegations against Janet Edwards have attracted significant public attention because they involve both the physical neglect and the alleged financial exploitation of a vulnerable elderly woman suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
According to investigators, the case evolved from reports of an elderly woman being left in unsanitary and unsafe living conditions into a broader investigation that uncovered allegations of fraud, identity theft, and the depletion of her life savings. Authorities maintain that Edwards abused her position as both daughter and caregiver, while prosecutors continue pursuing the criminal case in Florida courts.
