The Alabama youth baseball community is mourning the devastating loss of 34-year-old Jorge Fonseca, a beloved coach, father, and mentor who was shot and killed outside a Birmingham barbershop in front of his wife and four children after an argument escalated into deadly violence, according to police. The tragic incident has left family members, friends, players, and fellow coaches searching for answers while remembering a man known for his dedication to young athletes and his passion for helping children succeed both on and off the baseball field.

Fatal Shooting Outside Birmingham Barbershop

Authorities said the shooting occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. on June 13 outside La Vida Barberia Spa y Estilismo on West Valley Avenue in Birmingham, Alabama. Police and emergency personnel responded to reports of a man being shot and arrived to find Fonseca suffering from gunshot wounds outside the business.

Investigators determined that Fonseca and another man, whom police described as someone he knew, became involved in a confrontation. According to authorities, the disagreement escalated into a physical altercation outside the barbershop. During the fight, the suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Fonseca.

Lifesaving Efforts Were Unsuccessful

Paramedics immediately attempted lifesaving measures after arriving at the scene. Despite their efforts, Fonseca was pronounced dead on the sidewalk outside the barbershop. His death stunned witnesses and left family members devastated.

Suspect Quickly Taken Into Custody

Police said the suspected shooter fled the scene after the gunfire erupted. However, law enforcement officers located and arrested the suspect approximately 15 minutes later at a separate location. Authorities have not publicly released the suspect’s identity, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Wife and Four Children Witnessed the Horror

One of the most heartbreaking aspects of the case is that Fonseca’s family was present when the shooting occurred. Reports indicate that his wife and four children were either inside or immediately outside the barbershop during the confrontation and witnessed the violent events unfold. Several other customers were also inside the business at the time.

Friends later revealed that the family had been enjoying what was supposed to be a normal weekend and were preparing for a major family trip connected to youth baseball. Instead, the outing ended in tragedy.

Community Mourns the Loss of “Coach George”

Within Alabama’s travel baseball circles, Fonseca was affectionately known as “Coach George.” His death sent shockwaves through local teams and organizations where he volunteered his time coaching young players. Friends described him as a caring mentor who genuinely loved helping children develop confidence and skills through baseball.

Friend Recounts Heartbreaking Phone Call

Troy Whetstone, a close friend and fellow baseball coach, said he received a call from Fonseca’s wife following the shooting and immediately rushed to the scene. Whetstone later described the experience as one of the most difficult moments of his life.

According to Whetstone, he had spent time with Fonseca and one of his sons the evening before the tragedy. Learning that the father of four had been killed in front of his family was almost impossible to comprehend.

Family Was Preparing for World Series Trip

The tragedy became even more painful because Fonseca and his family were preparing to leave the next day for Panama City, Florida, where they planned to participate in a travel baseball World Series tournament. Friends said everyone was excited about the upcoming trip and looking forward to making memories together.

Whetstone said the family was in high spirits before the shooting and noted how heartbreaking it was that Fonseca never got the opportunity to attend the tournament with his loved ones.

A Friendship Built Through Baseball

Whetstone explained that he first met Fonseca in 2022 at a batting cage while both fathers were helping their sons learn baseball. The two quickly bonded over their shared passion for the sport and became close friends.

Over the following years, Fonseca became increasingly involved in coaching youth travel baseball teams. He worked alongside Whetstone through the Wow Factor 205 nonprofit organization and helped mentor numerous young athletes. Their friendship grew through years of coaching, traveling, and supporting their children’s baseball dreams.

Remembering the Good Times

After Fonseca’s death, Whetstone created a collection of photographs and videos documenting their years together. Looking through those memories, he recalled championship celebrations, baseball tournaments, and countless moments spent helping children improve their game.

One cherished video showed the two coaches celebrating a tournament victory on a baseball field, capturing the joy and enthusiasm that characterized Fonseca’s involvement in youth sports.

A Coach Who Inspired Young Players

Friends and fellow coaches described Fonseca as someone who led with compassion rather than criticism. According to those who knew him best, he had a unique ability to encourage children regardless of their athletic ability.

Dedicated to Every Child

Whetstone said Fonseca excelled at working with players who might have been overlooked by others. Rather than focusing solely on the most talented athletes, he invested time in helping every child improve and feel valued.

Those close to him said his coaching style centered on positivity, patience, and genuine care for young people. Parents appreciated his willingness to mentor children and create an environment where they could grow both as athletes and individuals.

Young Players Struggle With the Loss

Many of the children Fonseca coached were between the ages of 7 and 9. Friends said the news of his death hit them especially hard because of the close relationships he built with his players.

Whetstone noted that his own son viewed “Coach George” as a second father figure. The coach’s impact extended far beyond baseball, touching the lives of families throughout the community.

Investigation Continues

Police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have confirmed that the victim and the suspect were acquainted and that the fatal encounter stemmed from a confrontation that escalated into violence. Detectives have interviewed witnesses who were present during the incident and continue gathering evidence.

Officials have encouraged anyone with additional information to contact Birmingham homicide detectives or Crime Stoppers as the investigation moves forward.

Legacy of a Devoted Father and Coach

As family members prepare for funeral services and the baseball community plans memorial events in his honor, Jorge Fonseca is being remembered not for the violence that ended his life but for the positive influence he had on countless children. Friends describe him as a loving husband, devoted father of four, loyal friend, and passionate baseball coach whose presence made a lasting difference in the lives of young athletes.

For those who knew him as Coach George, his legacy will live on through the players he mentored, the families he inspired, and the lessons of encouragement, kindness, and dedication that he brought to every baseball field he stepped onto.
