2 Children Rescued From Filthy Home That ‘Smelled Like Death,’ Claim They Had Never Gone to School: Police

Authorities in Texas have rescued two young children from a home described by officers as so filthy that it “smelled like death.” The shocking discovery was made after a concerned neighbor reported a foul odor coming from the residence, prompting police to conduct a welfare check.

According to law enforcement officials, the children, aged 8 and 10, were found living in deplorable conditions and later told officers they had never attended school and did not know how to read or write. The case has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about child neglect and welfare oversight.

Police Respond to Disturbing Complaint

The incident unfolded in Temple, Texas, after a neighbor contacted authorities to report a strong and unusual odor coming from a nearby home. Officers arrived at the residence early in the morning to investigate the complaint.

As they approached the property, police immediately noticed an overwhelming smell emanating from the house. One officer reportedly described the odor as resembling that of a deceased person, raising concerns that someone inside might be dead.

Officers Forced to Enter the Residence

After receiving no response from repeated knocks on the doors and windows, officers decided to enter the property to ensure the safety of any occupants.

Instead of discovering a deceased individual, they encountered two adult men and two children living inside conditions that authorities later described as hazardous and unfit for human habitation.

Horrific Conditions Inside the Home

Investigators reported that nearly every room in the residence was covered with garbage, rotting food, and waste.

Rotting Food and Insect Infestation

Police said the kitchen contained food that had been left to decay for extended periods. The sink reportedly contained standing water filled with maggots and insects, while flies covered multiple surfaces throughout the house.

Authorities also found evidence of rodent activity, including rat and mouse droppings scattered throughout the residence.

No Clean Living Space

According to the arrest affidavit, officers were unable to locate a single clean area inside the home. Trash and debris covered floors, furniture, and household surfaces.

The unsanitary environment posed serious health risks, particularly for the two children who had been living there.

Children Found Sitting in Dirty Bathtub

One of the most disturbing aspects of the case was the condition in which the children were discovered.

Children Living in Neglect

Officers found the 8-year-old and 10-year-old sitting inside a bathtub partially filled with dirty water. The children appeared unkempt and showed visible signs of prolonged neglect.

One child reportedly had severely matted hair that appeared to contain insects. When officers instructed the children to get dressed, they returned wearing dirty clothes covered in food stains.

Signs of Severe Hygiene Issues

Authorities noted that both children emitted strong odors associated with urine, feces, body odor, and stagnant water.

Investigators also observed serious dental issues affecting one of the children, suggesting a lack of proper medical and dental care over an extended period.

Children Claim They Had Never Attended School

During conversations with officers, the children made statements that further alarmed investigators.

Unable to Read or Write

Police reported that both children said they had never attended school at any point in their lives. They also claimed they could not read or write.

The revelation raised concerns not only about neglect but also about educational deprivation and social isolation.

Neighbors Rarely Saw the Children

Investigators spoke with nearby residents who stated they had not seen the children outside the home for several years.

These accounts suggested the children may have spent much of their lives isolated from the outside world.

Allegations of Food Deprivation

Authorities also uncovered evidence indicating that the children may not have been receiving adequate nutrition.

Children Reportedly Had Not Eaten

According to investigators, the children had not eaten the night before officers arrived.

Police determined that the adults responsible for the children had failed to provide regular meals and proper care.

Children Caring for Each Other

Investigators reportedly learned that the siblings had largely been looking after one another rather than receiving supervision and support from responsible adults.

This finding added another layer of concern regarding the children’s overall welfare and development.

Emergency Medical Intervention

Following the discovery, authorities acted quickly to remove the children from the dangerous environment.

Taken to Hospital for Evaluation

The children were transported to a local children’s hospital for immediate medical assessment and treatment.

Healthcare professionals began evaluating their physical condition while child welfare specialists worked to determine the support and services they would require moving forward.

Child Protective Services Involved

Child Protective Services was called to the scene and became involved in the ongoing investigation.

Officials are expected to assess long-term placement options and provide educational, medical, and psychological support for the children.

Two Men Arrested

Following the investigation at the residence, police arrested two men connected to the home.

Facing Child Endangerment Charges

Authorities identified the suspects as Michael Robbins, 34, and John Robbins, 68.

Both men were charged with abandoning or endangering a child, according to law enforcement officials.

Investigation Continues

Police have indicated that the investigation remains active. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and determine the full extent of the children’s living conditions and the circumstances that led to their prolonged neglect.

Additional charges could be considered as investigators review medical records, educational history, and witness statements.

Community Shocked by Discovery

The case has stunned residents in the neighborhood, many of whom were unaware of the conditions inside the home.

Several neighbors expressed disbelief that children had been living in such circumstances for years without broader intervention.

The incident has also highlighted the important role community members can play in identifying and reporting potential cases of child neglect or abuse.

Growing Concerns About Child Welfare

Child welfare advocates say the case underscores the importance of early intervention and regular oversight when concerns arise regarding a child’s well-being.

Experts note that prolonged neglect can have lasting effects on physical health, emotional development, education, and social skills.

As the rescued children begin receiving care and support, authorities hope they can now access the medical treatment, education, and stability that were reportedly absent from their lives for years.

The case remains under investigation as officials work to uncover how the situation persisted for so long and what additional measures may be necessary to protect vulnerable children in similar circumstances.
