An 18-year-old New Hampshire man has been sentenced to decades in prison after admitting responsibility for a deadly shooting that occurred in a Walmart parking lot when he unexpectedly encountered his former girlfriend and her new companion.

The case, which shocked the Keene community in 2025, ended this week when Thomas Pickford pleaded guilty to reckless second-degree murder in the death of Christian Walker, a 17-year-old high school student. Pickford was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison, though court records indicate he may be eligible to reduce his minimum sentence through participation in educational, behavioral, and rehabilitation programs while incarcerated.

Routine Visit Turns Deadly

According to prosecutors, the incident occurred during the early morning hours of June 25, 2025, at a Walmart store on Winchester Street in Keene.

Authorities said Pickford had gone to the store with the intention of returning personal belongings to his former girlfriend following the end of their relationship. However, when he arrived in the parking lot, he reportedly saw her sitting in a pickup truck with another teenager, later identified as Christian Walker.

Investigators said the encounter appeared to trigger a deadly chain of events.

After dropping off the items, Pickford got back into his vehicle and began driving away.
