A family gathering in Nebraska ended in tragedy when a 57-year-old grandmother was allegedly killed during a violent confrontation involving her daughter and the daughter’s boyfriend. Authorities say the incident occurred during a barbecue at a residence in Elkhorn, Nebraska, and stemmed from an argument concerning a young child in the family. According to investigators, the victim’s daughter allegedly helped restrain her mother while her boyfriend suffocated the woman with a sock. Both suspects were subsequently arrested and face serious criminal charges.

Victim Identified as Jennifer Neiber

The victim was identified by authorities as Jennifer Neiber, 57. According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Jennifer had attended a family barbecue hosted by her daughter, Samantha Neiber, 25, and Samantha’s boyfriend, Mason Clarke, 30, on Saturday evening. What began as a family gathering allegedly escalated into a fatal confrontation later that night.

Family Gathering at Elkhorn Home

Investigators say the barbecue was being held at the couple’s home in Elkhorn, a community located west of Omaha. Family members were present during the gathering, including Samantha’s 3-year-old child. Authorities later indicated that the dispute that led to the killing centered on issues involving the young child.

Argument Over Grandchild Escalates Into Violence

According to the sheriff’s office, tensions rose after Samantha’s child had been put to bed. Jennifer reportedly became involved in an argument with Clarke concerning the child. Officials have not publicly disclosed the specific subject of the disagreement, but they confirmed it involved Samantha’s 3-year-old child, who was not Clarke’s biological child.

Verbal Dispute Turns Physical

Investigators allege that the disagreement initially began as a verbal argument before becoming physical. Authorities say the confrontation ultimately resulted in a deadly attack on Jennifer. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office stated that the altercation culminated in Clarke allegedly forcing a sock into Jennifer’s mouth while Samantha restrained her mother.

Police Say Daughter Helped Restrain Her Mother

One of the most disturbing allegations in the case is the claim that Jennifer’s own daughter actively participated in the attack.

Samantha Allegedly Held Victim’s Wrists

According to law enforcement officials, Samantha held Jennifer’s wrists down against the ground while Clarke carried out the fatal assault. Investigators allege that this restraint prevented Jennifer from defending herself or escaping during the attack.

Sock Allegedly Used to Suffocate Victim

Authorities say Clarke placed a sock into Jennifer’s mouth during the struggle. The sheriff’s office alleges that the action caused Jennifer to be suffocated. Emergency responders later arrived at the scene, but efforts to save her were unsuccessful.

Emergency Responders Pronounce Grandmother Dead

Following the attack, emergency personnel from the Omaha Fire Department responded to the residence. Medical personnel determined that Jennifer Neiber had died at the scene. The circumstances surrounding her death immediately prompted a criminal investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Suspicious Death Reported to Authorities

Deputies were dispatched to the home at approximately 10 p.m. after receiving a report regarding a suspicious death. Upon arrival, investigators encountered a troubling scene inside the residence.

Investigators Discover Suspects Inside Residence

When deputies entered the home, they reportedly found Samantha Neiber and Mason Clarke sitting on a bed. Jennifer’s body was located on the floor directly in front of them. The discovery led investigators to begin interviews and collect evidence regarding what had occurred.

Clarke Questioned Before Arrest

Authorities interviewed Clarke following the incident. After the interview, he was arrested and booked into custody. Samantha was also taken into custody as investigators examined her alleged role in the fatal encounter.

Criminal Charges Filed Against Both Suspects

Law enforcement officials announced multiple charges against the two suspects following their arrests.

Charges Against Mason Clarke

Clarke was arrested on suspicion of:

  • Second-degree murder
  • Child abuse by neglect without injury

Investigators have not publicly detailed the specific circumstances behind the child neglect allegation, but it was included among the charges announced by authorities.

Charges Against Samantha Neiber

Samantha was arrested on allegations of:

  • Accessory to a Class I felony
  • Child abuse by neglect without injury

Authorities contend that her alleged actions during the confrontation contributed to the commission of the crime.

Child Removed From Home Following Arrests

After the arrests, officials took steps to ensure the safety of Samantha’s 3-year-old child.

Child Placed With Advocacy Organization

The child was transported from the residence and temporarily placed with Project Harmony, a local child advocacy and domestic abuse support organization. Authorities have not disclosed any additional information regarding future custody arrangements.

Questions Remain About Motive

Although investigators have identified the argument over Samantha’s child as the catalyst for the confrontation, several details remain unclear.

Authorities Have Not Released Full Details

Law enforcement officials have not publicly explained what specifically triggered the dispute between Jennifer and Clarke. Investigators also have not released information indicating whether there had been previous conflicts among family members before the deadly incident. The exact sequence of events leading to the fatal struggle remains part of the ongoing investigation.

Suspects Held in Douglas County Jail

Following their arrests, both Samantha Neiber and Mason Clarke were booked into the Douglas County Correctional Center in Omaha. Court proceedings are expected to determine the next steps in the criminal case as prosecutors pursue charges related to Jennifer Neiber’s death.

Community Shocked by Allegations

The case has drawn significant attention because of the family relationship between the victim and the accused. Authorities allege that a disagreement involving a young grandchild escalated into a deadly attack in which a daughter participated in the killing of her own mother. As the investigation continues, prosecutors and law enforcement officials are expected to seek additional evidence to establish exactly how the events unfolded during the fatal family gathering.
