‘Bash your head in’: Man threatened kids on go-kart with meat cleaver because he was furious about noise in neighborhood, cops say

A Florida man is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he threatened two teenagers with a meat cleaver and a large kitchen knife during a dispute over the noise coming from a go-kart being worked on in a residential neighborhood.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on the evening of June 8 in Clermont, a city located west of Orlando. Deputies were called to a neighborhood dispute involving a knife after reports that a man had confronted teenagers who were working on a go-kart in a garage.

Noise Complaint Escalated Into Dangerous Confrontation

Investigators said the teenagers were revving the engine of a go-kart while attempting to tune its carburetor. The youths acknowledged that the engine was loud, but said they were simply working on the vehicle inside the garage.

Authorities identified the suspect as Richard Carter, a neighborhood resident who lived across the street from where the teenagers were working.

According to the arrest affidavit, Carter became increasingly angry about the noise and walked over to confront the youths. The teenagers told deputies that Carter immediately began yelling and cursing at them over the sound coming from the garage.

Witnesses said Carter threw a lawn chair across the driveway during the confrontation and demanded that one of the boys leave the neighborhood. The teen he targeted was reportedly visiting a friend and did not live in the subdivision.

Teens Tried to Defuse the Situation

Despite Carter’s anger, the teenagers attempted to calm him down and de-escalate the confrontation. However, deputies said Carter remained enraged and refused to back down.

According to investigators, Carter then armed himself with two weapons — a meat cleaver and a large kitchen knife.

The arrest report states that Carter approached the teenagers while holding the weapons and continued shouting at them.

Alleged Threat to “Bash Your Head In”

Deputies said one of the teenagers reported that Carter threatened to “bash your head in” if the go-kart engine was started again.

Authorities noted that the teen was unsure whether the threat was directed specifically at him or at both boys. Nevertheless, investigators concluded that the threat was serious enough to place the victims in fear for their lives.

According to the affidavit, Carter allegedly moved toward one of the teens while carrying the meat cleaver and continued ordering him to leave the neighborhood.

The frightened teenager reportedly raised his hands in surrender and slowly backed away from Carter before climbing onto a four-wheeler and leaving the area.

Teen Returned Home Terrified

After escaping the confrontation, the teen drove to his home, which was located just outside the subdivision.

According to his parents, the boy was so frightened by what had happened that he struggled to explain the incident when he arrived home.

Investigators wrote in the arrest report that the teenager could barely speak because he was so terrified.

His mother and family members quickly contacted emergency services and later returned to the neighborhood to speak with responding deputies.

Carter Admitted Threatening the Boys, Deputies Say

Body-camera footage obtained by local media reportedly captured Carter speaking with deputies after the incident.

During the conversation, Carter allegedly admitted that he had confronted the boys while armed with the meat cleaver and kitchen knife.

According to deputies, Carter explained that he grabbed the weapons because they were the first items available when he became angry about the noise.

Investigators said Carter described the knives as “convenient items” and suggested that he would have grabbed virtually anything nearby because of his frustration. At one point, he reportedly told deputies that he might have picked up a wrench if one had been available.

“I Didn’t Do Anything”

Despite acknowledging that he had armed himself and confronted the teenagers, Carter reportedly insisted that he had done nothing wrong.

Body-camera footage showed a deputy challenging that claim.

The deputy reminded Carter that he had just admitted to grabbing weapons out of anger before confronting the teenagers.

Investigators also pointed out that he could have handled the situation differently by contacting law enforcement and filing a formal noise complaint instead of personally confronting the youths while armed.

Criminal Charges Filed

Following the investigation, deputies arrested Carter and transported him to the Lake County Jail.

Authorities charged him with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Court records indicate that Carter was later released from custody after posting bond. A judge set his bond at $10,000.

Upcoming Court Proceedings

As the criminal case moves forward, Carter is expected to appear in court to answer the allegations.

Prosecutors will likely rely on witness statements, the arrest affidavit, and body-camera footage as key evidence in the case.

The teenagers involved were not physically injured during the confrontation, but investigators emphasized that the victims feared they could be seriously harmed when Carter allegedly threatened them while wielding the meat cleaver and knife.

Community Concerns After the Incident

The case has drawn attention because of how quickly a neighborhood disagreement over noise escalated into an alleged armed confrontation involving minors.

According to investigators, the dispute began with nothing more than the sound of a go-kart engine being tested in a garage. Within minutes, authorities say, the situation turned into a dangerous encounter involving deadly weapons and threats of violence.

Law enforcement officials stressed that residents who have concerns about excessive noise should contact local authorities rather than take matters into their own hands.

The case remains pending as Carter prepares for his next court appearance and prosecutors continue their review of the evidence gathered by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
