Man brutally stabbed roommate an ‘unknown number of times’ during fatal argument about sleeping arrangements

An Indiana man has been sentenced to decades in prison after a deadly dispute with his roommate escalated into a fatal stabbing over where one of them would sleep. Prosecutors said the confrontation began as a verbal disagreement inside a Fort Wayne apartment before turning violent within seconds, leaving an 18-year-old man dead.

Jury Convicts Defendant of Murder

Authorities identified the defendant as Draylon Marquise Crutchfield, who was convicted of murdering his roommate, Muhammad A. Williams, following a jury trial in Allen County, Indiana. Crutchfield was found guilty on one count of murder in connection with the July 2025 killing.

Following the conviction, Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull sentenced Crutchfield to 60 years in prison. The sentence brought an end to a case that began with a seemingly minor disagreement but ended in a fatal act of violence.

Fatal Incident at Fort Wayne Apartment Complex

The deadly encounter took place at an apartment complex on Stardale Drive in the Oakland Park neighborhood of Fort Wayne. Police responded to reports of a stabbing on the evening of July 24, 2025.

When officers arrived, they found Williams suffering from multiple stab wounds. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries.

Crutchfield was quickly identified as a suspect and was arrested at the scene. Investigators later determined that the victim and defendant were roommates living in the same residence.

Argument Began Over Sleeping Arrangements

According to court records and police affidavits, the confrontation started after Williams objected to where Crutchfield intended to sleep inside the apartment.

Investigators said Williams allegedly told Crutchfield not to sleep on his mother’s couch. What began as a verbal disagreement soon intensified as the two men exchanged heated words. Crutchfield later told police that he initially chose not to respond but claimed Williams continued verbally confronting him.

Tensions Escalated Rapidly

According to Crutchfield’s statements to police, Williams became increasingly aggressive during the dispute. Witnesses and the defendant both reported that Williams had been holding an infant during part of the argument before handing the child to another person in the apartment as the confrontation escalated.

Investigators learned that another person present in the apartment briefly stepped outside to make a phone call while the argument continued inside. During that period, the verbal exchange allegedly became more hostile.

Defendant Claimed He Was Attacked First

Crutchfield told police that Williams threatened him and indicated that he had been waiting for a confrontation. According to the defendant’s account, he was already holding a knife when he warned Williams not to approach him.

The defendant claimed that Williams ignored the warning and punched him several times in the head. Crutchfield later said the blows caused his vision to become blurry. He asserted that he acted after being struck during the confrontation.

Witnesses Described a Brief Fight

A witness who reportedly observed the incident told investigators that the physical altercation lasted only a matter of seconds before the stabbing occurred. According to police documents, the witness estimated that the fight did not last longer than three seconds before Williams was stabbed.

This testimony became a significant part of the investigation because it suggested that the deadly violence occurred almost immediately after the confrontation turned physical.

Victim Stabbed an “Unknown Number of Times”

Investigators said Crutchfield admitted to stabbing Williams but claimed he could not specify how many times he used the knife. According to charging documents, he told police that he stabbed his roommate an “unknown number of times.”

The defendant attributed his inability to recall the exact number of stab wounds to the alleged punches he received during the confrontation and the blurred vision he said resulted from the blows.

Medical responders later confirmed that Williams had suffered multiple stab wounds before being transported to the hospital. He ultimately succumbed to those injuries.

Events After the Stabbing

After being stabbed, Williams reportedly ran out of the apartment. Police said Crutchfield followed him outside while still carrying the knife.

The defendant then approached a neighboring apartment. Witnesses told investigators that Crutchfield was covered in blood and was holding a bloody kitchen knife in his right hand. According to police, he told neighbors that he had stabbed Williams after being punched in the face.

These statements were later included in court records and became part of the evidence presented during the prosecution.

Investigation and Criminal Proceedings

Following the stabbing, detectives collected witness statements, interviewed Crutchfield, and reviewed evidence from the apartment complex. Prosecutors ultimately charged him with murder.

Throughout the investigation, Crutchfield did not deny stabbing Williams but maintained that the victim initiated the physical confrontation. Prosecutors nevertheless argued that the evidence supported a murder conviction, and a jury ultimately agreed.

Judge Imposes 60-Year Sentence

After his conviction, Crutchfield appeared before Judge Fran Gull for sentencing. The court imposed a 60-year prison term, ensuring that he will spend decades behind bars for the killing.

The sentence closed a tragic case that began with a dispute over a couch and sleeping arrangements but ended with the death of an 18-year-old man. Investigators, witnesses, and prosecutors described the confrontation as one that escalated from a verbal disagreement to lethal violence in a matter of moments.
