A Kansas man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities allege that his unleashed dogs fatally attacked a 13-year-old boy and that he later concealed the death by transporting the child’s body across state lines and dumping it in a remote ravine.

According to prosecutors, 47-year-old Damon Leonard has been charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, interference with law enforcement, criminal desecration by unauthorized control of a dead body, and permitting a dangerous animal to be at large. The charges stem from the death of 13-year-old Airen Andula, a seventh-grade student from Linn County, Kansas.

Tragic Events Began During a Routine Trip

Investigators say the tragedy occurred in December 2025, just days before Christmas. Airen had reportedly left home on his bicycle to help a friend by letting out the family’s dogs and chickens while they were away. Family members told local media that the task was expected to take only a few minutes.

As the teenager rode along a gravel path toward his friend’s house, he allegedly encountered Leonard’s dogs. Authorities say the animals, described as mixed mastiff and pit bull breeds, were known to roam freely in the neighborhood. The dogs allegedly attacked and mauled the boy.

Authorities Allege Boy Died During the Attack

According to court documents cited in the case, Airen suffered fatal injuries during the dog attack. Prosecutors contend that Leonard did not contact emergency responders or seek medical assistance for the child. Instead, investigators allege he took actions intended to conceal what had happened.

The allegations have become a central focus of the criminal case, with authorities arguing that Leonard’s conduct after the attack elevated the severity of the charges against him.

Body Allegedly Transported Across State Lines

An arrest affidavit states that after the fatal mauling, Leonard allegedly loaded Airen’s body into a vehicle and transported it approximately 30 miles away into neighboring Missouri. Prosecutors allege that he then threw the boy’s body down a large ravine located in a creek bed.

The discovery stunned investigators and devastated the victim’s family, who had been searching desperately for answers after Airen disappeared. Authorities say the remote location complicated efforts to locate the child and determine exactly what had happened.

Previous Conviction in Missouri

Before the latest Kansas charges were announced, Leonard had already faced legal consequences in Missouri related to the handling of Airen’s body.

Court records show that he was convicted of abandonment of a corpse in Missouri and was sentenced to four years in prison. That conviction was tied specifically to the alleged transportation and disposal of the boy’s body.

The newly announced Kansas charges focus on the circumstances surrounding Airen’s death and the actions prosecutors say followed the attack.

Family Struggles to Understand What Happened

The death of Airen Andula has left his family searching for answers and struggling to comprehend the events surrounding the tragedy.

His mother, Jody Andula, expressed particular anguish over what authorities say happened after the attack. She indicated that while a dog attack could be viewed as a terrible accident, she found it impossible to accept allegations that someone would conceal the death of a child and mislead family members during the search.

According to reports, family members were desperately looking for Airen after he failed to return home from what should have been a short trip. The realization that someone may have known what happened while they searched has added another layer of grief for those closest to the victim.

Community Members Question Why Help Was Never Called

The case has generated strong reactions throughout the community, particularly regarding the allegation that emergency services were never contacted.

Friends and neighbors have questioned why authorities were not notified immediately after the attack. Some have wondered whether a quicker response could have changed the outcome or at least provided answers to the family sooner.

The circumstances described by investigators have led many residents to focus not only on the fatal dog attack but also on the decisions allegedly made afterward.

Charges Reflect Multiple Alleged Offenses

Kansas prosecutors have filed a range of charges that address both the fatal attack and the alleged actions that followed.

The charges include:

Second-Degree Murder

Prosecutors allege Leonard bears criminal responsibility for the death of Airen Andula.

Involuntary Manslaughter

Authorities have also included a manslaughter charge as part of the case.

Interference With Law Enforcement

Investigators contend that actions taken after the incident hindered authorities’ efforts to determine what happened.

Criminal Desecration and Unauthorized Control of a Dead Body

This charge relates to the alleged transportation and disposal of the victim’s remains.

Permitting a Dangerous Animal to Be at Large

Authorities allege that the dogs involved in the attack were allowed to roam freely despite concerns regarding their behavior.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

The criminal case remains active as prosecutors continue to pursue the charges against Leonard. Investigators and attorneys are expected to rely heavily on witness statements, forensic evidence, and details contained within the arrest affidavit as the proceedings move forward.

For the Andula family, the legal process represents another chapter in a tragedy that began with a routine bike ride and ended with the loss of a 13-year-old boy whose disappearance prompted a desperate search. The case has drawn widespread attention because of both the fatal dog attack and the extraordinary allegations that followed, including claims that the victim’s body was hidden in an attempt to conceal the circumstances of his death.
