‘Unfolded in plain sight’: Parents who let their 3-month-old daughter wilt away until she weighed just 3.64 pounds finally learn their fates

A California couple convicted in the starvation death of their infant daughter has now learned their fate after a case prosecutors described as one of the most heartbreaking examples of child neglect and abuse. Authorities said the tragedy unfolded over several months in plain sight as the baby’s health steadily deteriorated, ultimately leaving her weighing just 3.64 pounds at the time of her death.

The case centered on Brandon Copeland and Elizabeth Ucman, whose 3-month-old daughter, Delilah, died in 2021 after suffering from severe starvation and neglect. Prosecutors argued that the infant was born healthy and had no underlying medical condition that could explain her dramatic weight loss. Instead, they said the evidence showed the child was deprived of adequate nutrition and basic medical care until her death.

Sentencing Brings a Long Legal Process to an End

On June 17, 2026, a judge sentenced both Copeland and Ucman to 15 years to life in prison after separate juries found them guilty of second-degree murder earlier in the year. The sentencing marked the conclusion of a years-long criminal case that began following Delilah’s death in November 2021. Prosecutors stated that both parents bore responsibility for the infant’s suffering and death because they failed to provide the care necessary to keep her alive.

San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said Delilah entered the world healthy and full of promise but died because her parents withheld the care every infant requires. According to Stephan, the child never had the opportunity to grow or thrive because of decisions made by those responsible for protecting her.

The Investigation Began After an Emergency Call

Authorities were first alerted when police and emergency personnel responded to the family’s City Heights apartment in November 2021 after receiving a report that an infant was unresponsive and needed medical attention. Delilah was transported to a hospital, but doctors were unable to save her life.

Investigators quickly became concerned about the baby’s physical condition. Medical examinations revealed that the infant was severely malnourished and drastically underweight. According to prosecutors, Delilah weighed only 3.64 pounds when she died, a figure that was less than half of her healthy birth weight.

Prosecutors Said Starvation Was Obvious and Preventable

During trial proceedings, prosecutors emphasized that Delilah did not suffer from a disease or medical disorder that could explain her condition. Instead, they argued that her death resulted from prolonged starvation and neglect.

Deputy District Attorney Franciesca Balerio told jurors that starvation is not something that happens suddenly. She argued that Delilah’s decline occurred gradually and visibly over time. Prosecutors repeatedly stated that the infant’s worsening condition unfolded in plain sight and could not have gone unnoticed by her parents. According to the prosecution, the couple failed to seek medical help, failed to provide sufficient nutrition, and failed to take any meaningful steps to prevent the child’s death.

Evidence Presented During Trial

The prosecution’s case focused heavily on medical evidence documenting Delilah’s condition. Experts testified that the infant’s body showed the devastating effects of prolonged malnutrition. Prosecutors argued that her weight loss and physical deterioration were so severe that any reasonable caregiver would have recognized that something was seriously wrong.

Jurors heard evidence that Delilah’s death was not the result of an unavoidable medical emergency. Instead, prosecutors maintained that her condition worsened over weeks and months without intervention. They argued that the infant’s suffering could have been prevented had her parents sought medical treatment or provided proper nutrition.

Separate Juries Reached the Same Conclusion

Because both defendants were tried in a single proceeding before separate juries, each jury independently evaluated the evidence against one parent. Despite hearing the cases separately, both juries reached the same conclusion.

In February 2026, each jury convicted its respective defendant of second-degree murder. The verdicts reflected prosecutors’ arguments that both parents knowingly failed in their responsibilities and that their actions directly contributed to Delilah’s death.

Prosecutors Called Delilah a Defenseless Victim

Following the convictions and sentencing, prosecutors described Delilah as a defenseless infant who depended entirely on her parents for survival.

District Attorney Stephan praised the efforts of child abuse prosecutors who handled the case and said the conviction ensured accountability for the infant’s death. She noted that cases involving parents harming their own children are among the most difficult and emotionally challenging to prosecute. According to Stephan, the sentence provides a measure of justice and dignity for a child whose life was cut tragically short.

A Tragedy That Shocked Investigators

Authorities involved in the investigation described the case as particularly disturbing because Delilah was born healthy and had every opportunity to survive. Investigators and prosecutors repeatedly emphasized that there was no medical explanation for her condition other than starvation and neglect.

The image of a 3-month-old baby weighing only 3.64 pounds became one of the most powerful pieces of evidence presented during the case. Prosecutors argued that the infant’s deteriorating health was impossible to miss and that intervention at any point could have saved her life.

Final Outcome

With the sentencing of Brandon Copeland and Elizabeth Ucman to 15 years to life in prison, the criminal proceedings have effectively reached their conclusion. Prosecutors maintained throughout the case that Delilah’s death was entirely preventable and resulted from the deliberate failure of her parents to provide food, care, and medical attention.

The case stands as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of severe child neglect. Prosecutors said Delilah’s suffering occurred gradually and visibly, making her death all the more tragic because it could have been prevented. More than four years after the infant’s death, the court’s sentence ensures that both parents will spend years behind bars for their role in the starvation death of their daughter.
