Three promoted within Burlington Police Department
The Burlington Police Department in Massachusetts has announced the promotion of three officers as part of a leadership transition aimed at strengthening the department’s future. The promotions recognize years of service, experience, and commitment from officers who have taken on new responsibilities within the agency.
The newly promoted officers are Thomas Carlson, promoted from lieutenant to captain; William Trelegan, promoted from sergeant to lieutenant; and Daniel Main, promoted from officer to sergeant. The three officers were officially sworn into their new positions during a ceremony on June 8.
Thomas Carlson Promoted to Captain After 22 Years of Service
Thomas Carlson, now serving as captain, has been a member of the Burlington Police Department for more than two decades. During his career, he has held several leadership roles, including patrol lieutenant, field training commander, and police academy instructor.
Throughout his service, Carlson has received recognition for his dedication and professionalism. His experience in training and leadership has made him an important part of the department’s command structure.

William Trelegan Moves Up to Lieutenant Role
William Trelegan, who previously served as a sergeant, has been promoted to lieutenant. He joined the Burlington Police Department in 2008 after earlier service with the Ayer Police Department and the University of Massachusetts Boston Police Department.
During his time with Burlington police, Trelegan has served as a field training officer and assistant accreditation manager. He has also completed leadership and crisis response training designed to prepare officers for supervisory responsibilities.
His promotion reflects his years of experience and involvement in helping train and support other members of the department.
Daniel Main Promoted to Sergeant
Officer Daniel Main has been promoted to sergeant after joining the Burlington Police Department in 2018. Before becoming an officer, Main studied juvenile justice and math/science at Wheelock College.
Main has contributed to specialized police operations, including serving with the NEMLEC SWAT team and working as a drone unit pilot. He has also completed training focused on tactical leadership and frontline supervision.
His new role as sergeant will place him in a leadership position overseeing officers and supporting daily department operations.
