Driver tried to run down wife on her birthday but fatally crashed into nightclub manager instead

A Texas man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison after a violent incident in downtown Houston that began as a domestic dispute and ended with the death of a nightclub manager who attempted to help his wife. Prosecutors said the defendant intentionally drove his vehicle toward his wife following an argument during her birthday celebration but instead struck and killed an innocent bystander.

Houston Birthday Celebration Turned Deadly

The incident occurred on August 18, 2024, in Houston, Texas. According to court records and investigators, 37-year-old Sanden James George and his wife were spending the evening in downtown Houston celebrating her birthday. The couple had visited Playground, a nightclub and bar located in Houston’s Midtown district.

Authorities stated that George consumed significant amounts of alcohol during the night. Investigators said he drank an entire bottle of Hennessy and consumed several additional Hennessy drinks while at the venue.

As the evening progressed, tensions between George and his wife escalated into an argument.

Argument Escalated Into Physical Assault

Following the dispute, George’s wife left the nightclub. George followed her outside on foot, where the confrontation reportedly became physical. According to the probable cause affidavit, George began assaulting his wife in public.

The altercation was witnessed by several employees from a nearby nightclub called Barbarella. Among them was 41-year-old Cindy Reyes, a manager at the club. Reyes and three of her coworkers intervened after observing the assault and attempted to protect George’s wife.

Nightclub Employees Attempted to Stop the Attack

Witnesses told police that Reyes and her colleagues stepped in to separate George from his wife. The employees managed to restrain him for a period of time. However, George eventually broke free from their hold.

Instead of leaving the scene, George ran toward his vehicle.

According to prosecutors, his actions in the moments that followed demonstrated a deliberate attempt to use the car as a weapon.

George Allegedly Targeted His Wife With His Vehicle

After entering his vehicle, George accelerated toward the area where his wife was standing. Investigators said he drove recklessly and nearly struck three bystanders.

One Bystander Reportedly Fired at George

Authorities revealed that one of the individuals nearly hit by the vehicle attempted to shoot at George as he drove through the area. Despite this, George continued driving.

Witnesses said George then executed a U-turn and again directed his vehicle toward his wife. Prosecutors argued that he intentionally aimed the vehicle at her in a second attempt.

Wife Escaped by Taking Cover

As George drove toward her, his wife managed to avoid being hit by taking cover between two parked vehicles. Her quick action likely saved her life.

However, the vehicle continued forward.

Nightclub Manager Cindy Reyes Was Killed

Instead of striking his intended target, George’s vehicle slammed into Cindy Reyes. Witnesses reported that the impact was so severe that Reyes was thrown across the street.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Reyes could not be saved.

Cause of Death

Authorities pronounced Reyes dead at the scene. Medical officials determined that she died from blunt force trauma sustained during the collision.

Her death shocked the Houston nightlife community, where she was known as a respected manager and colleague.

Arrest and Investigation

Police arrested George shortly after the incident. During the investigation, he admitted to consuming alcohol before arriving at the nightclub and continuing to drink while there.

Investigators gathered witness statements, surveillance evidence, and other materials supporting the allegation that George intentionally used his vehicle in an attempt to strike his wife.

Criminal History

Court records showed that George had a lengthy criminal history before the fatal incident. Prosecutors noted previous offenses involving assault and drug-related crimes.

Following his arrest in August 2024, he remained in the Harris County Jail while the case moved through the court system.

Guilty Plea and Sentencing

George ultimately pleaded guilty to murder in connection with the death of Cindy Reyes. As part of the legal proceedings, prosecutors argued that Reyes lost her life while attempting to protect a woman from domestic violence.

A Texas judge sentenced George to 45 years in prison. The sentence means he will spend decades behind bars for the fatal collision that killed Reyes.

Impact on Reyes’ Family and Friends

During court proceedings, prosecutors highlighted the devastating impact Reyes’ death had on her loved ones.

Prosecutors Described Family’s Grief

Rodrigo Escobar, a prosecutor involved in the case, said Reyes’ family and friends were deeply affected by the tragedy. He noted that they were forced to cope with the sudden loss of a daughter, friend, and loved one.

According to Escobar, the family was left grieving the death of a woman who had simply stepped in to help someone in danger.

A Tragic Attempt to Help

The case stands as a tragic example of how quickly domestic violence situations can escalate. Cindy Reyes was not involved in the dispute between George and his wife. Instead, she became a victim after intervening to protect another person from harm.

What began as a birthday celebration ended in tragedy, with a respected nightclub manager losing her life while trying to stop an assault. George’s guilty plea and 45-year prison sentence brought a measure of legal accountability, but they cannot undo the loss suffered by Reyes’ family, friends, and the Houston community.
