A heartbreaking case involving a missing Indiana mother has ended in tragedy after authorities in Mexico discovered the body of 30-year-old Makala Pendley, who had been missing for months along with her seven children. Pendley, who was approximately six months pregnant at the time of her death, was found brutally murdered in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. Mexican authorities have arrested the children’s father, Joseph Jude Butler Jr., who is now the primary suspect in the killing.

Family’s Search Ends in Horror

Makala Pendley, an Indianapolis resident and mother of seven, disappeared in February 2026 after leaving the United States with her children and Butler. According to reports, Pendley allegedly fled Indiana because she feared that authorities might take custody of her children, though the exact circumstances surrounding those fears remain unclear.

For months, family members searched desperately for answers regarding her whereabouts and the safety of her children. Their fears were confirmed when authorities in Chiapas announced that Pendley’s body had been discovered in a rural village near Zinacantán.

Discovery of the Body

Mexican officials reported that Pendley’s body was found in a ditch in the village of ElambĂł Bajo, located in the municipality of Zinacantán in Chiapas. Prosecutors said the pregnant mother had been dead for between eight and twelve hours before her body was discovered.

According to authorities, the circumstances surrounding her death indicated extreme violence. The body was reportedly found nude, and investigators determined that she had been subjected to a brutal attack before being left in the ditch.

Details of the Fatal Attack

Officials from the Chiapas State Prosecutor’s Office stated that Pendley died from a traumatic brain injury caused by blunt-force trauma. Prosecutor Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca confirmed that the injuries were severe and consistent with a violent assault.

Family Describes Brutal Injuries

Pendley’s relatives revealed even more disturbing details about the condition in which she was found. Her sister, Jennifer Lambert, stated that family members were informed Makala had been raped, beaten, and left naked in the ditch. Lambert later described the attack as extraordinarily violent, saying her sister was found with her “head bashed in.”

The revelations devastated the family, who had spent months hoping that Pendley and her children would be found safe. Lambert told reporters that the news still felt unreal and that the entire family was struggling to process the loss.

Seven Children Found Alive

While Pendley’s death shocked investigators and relatives alike, authorities confirmed that her seven children were located alive. Officials said the children were found in the San CristĂłbal de las Casas area of Chiapas and appeared to be in good health.

Children Under Protective Custody

Following their recovery, the children were placed under the care of Mexican authorities while arrangements were made with U.S. officials for their return to the United States. Law enforcement agencies and representatives from the U.S. Embassy have been coordinating efforts to reunite the children with family members in Indiana.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department later confirmed that all seven children had been located safely.

Father Arrested as Prime Suspect

Authorities arrested Joseph Jude Butler Jr., the father of Pendley’s children and her reported partner. Mexican officials identified him as the primary suspect in the case and indicated that evidence gathered during the investigation pointed toward his involvement.

Prosecutors Seek Maximum Punishment

Chiapas State Prosecutor Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca stated publicly that authorities intend to pursue the harshest punishment available under Mexican law if Butler is convicted. Officials described the case as a suspected femicide, a legal classification used in Mexico for the gender-based killing of a woman.

The prosecutor said investigators would seek a sentence of up to 100 years in prison for the perpetrator. He added that Butler’s criminal responsibility would be determined through ongoing legal proceedings.

Earlier Encounters With Authorities

Reports indicate that after Pendley initially arrived in Mexico with her children, local authorities encountered the family and temporarily took custody of the children. However, the children were later returned to Pendley before the events that ultimately led to her death.

As investigators continue reviewing the timeline, authorities are examining the family’s movements between their departure from Indiana and Pendley’s death in Chiapas.

Family Remembers a Devoted Mother

Relatives have described Makala Pendley as a loving mother who dedicated herself to her children. Her sister emphasized that despite life’s challenges, Pendley consistently placed her children first and worked hard to care for them.

Fundraiser Launched for Children

In the aftermath of the tragedy, family members created a fundraising campaign to help support the seven children and assist with expenses related to bringing Pendley’s body back to the United States. The campaign also aims to provide long-term support for the children as they cope with the devastating loss of their mother.

Family members described the tragedy as the most painful experience of their lives and said the emotional impact has left them shattered.

Investigation Continues

Mexican authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Pendley’s death and the events that occurred after she left Indiana with her children and Butler. Prosecutors have indicated that additional evidence is being gathered as the case proceeds through the legal system.

For Pendley’s family, however, the focus has shifted toward bringing her home and caring for the seven children she leaves behind. As criminal proceedings move forward, relatives hope that those responsible for her death will be held fully accountable.
