A California mother who initially claimed her 2-year-old son accidentally drowned while taking a bath has now been charged with murder after investigators concluded the child’s death was not an accident.
According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, 41-year-old Melissa Beisel of Fresno allegedly killed her 2-year-old son, Aidan, and then staged the scene to make it appear as though the toddler had drowned while bathing in a plastic storage bin placed inside a walk-in shower. Prosecutors say she later put on what they described as a calculated act designed to convince authorities that the tragedy was an unfortunate accident.
Initial Investigation Treated Death as a Drowning
The case began on September 22, 2025, when authorities responded to a home in Placentia, California, following reports of a child drowning.
At the time, investigators were told that Beisel had been bathing Aidan in a plastic storage container that was being used as a makeshift bathtub inside the family’s walk-in shower. According to her account, she briefly stepped away from the bathroom to retrieve soap and was gone for approximately two minutes. When she returned, she claimed she found the toddler face down in the water and unresponsive.
Police initially believed the account and treated the incident as a drowning death.
Mother Claimed She Tried to Save Her Son
Authorities said Beisel told investigators that after discovering her son unresponsive, she immediately attempted CPR.
