‘Does it look like I’m OK’: Carjacker snatched Chick-fil-A french fry from child after stealing car from woman who stopped to help him following crash, cops claim
A bizarre chain of events unfolded in Deerfield Beach, Florida, when a man who had just crashed his SUV allegedly carjacked a woman who stopped to help him, drove to a nearby Chick-fil-A, grabbed a french fry from a child, and later clashed with deputies before being arrested. Authorities say the incident involved multiple criminal acts occurring within a short period of time and left witnesses stunned by what they observed.
Crash on Hillsboro Boulevard Sparks Unusual Crime Spree
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred shortly before noon on Saturday in the 500 block of East Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Deputies received several reports after a man, later identified as 46-year-old Cory Coddington, allegedly crashed his SUV into a tree.
Witnesses who saw the crash believed the driver might be injured and in need of assistance. One of those witnesses was Shyann Figaro, who stopped to check on the man after seeing the wreck.
Woman Stops to Help Injured Driver
Figaro later recounted how she approached the crash scene out of concern for the driver’s well-being. Instead of receiving help, however, she allegedly became the victim of a carjacking.
Speaking about the incident, Figaro said that after she stopped and exited her vehicle to assist the driver, he allegedly got into her vehicle and drove away.
“He stole my car,” she said, explaining that she had stopped to help before the suspect allegedly took advantage of the situation and fled in her vehicle.
Suspect Allegedly Drives Stolen Vehicle to Chick-fil-A
After leaving the crash scene in the allegedly stolen car, authorities say Coddington drove to a nearby Chick-fil-A restaurant.
Witnesses there reportedly noticed that the man appeared injured and was covered in blood when he arrived. His appearance immediately drew attention from customers and bystanders who were concerned about his condition.
“Does It Look Like I’m OK?”
One witness, Laurence Lebel, described an exchange that occurred shortly after the suspect arrived at the restaurant.
According to Lebel, another person asked the man whether he was alright. The suspect allegedly responded with the remark that would later become the headline of the incident:
“Does it look like I’m okay?”
The statement reflected the chaotic circumstances surrounding the crash and subsequent alleged crimes.
Child’s French Fry Becomes Unexpected Target
Witnesses said the unusual behavior did not stop with the suspect’s arrival at Chick-fil-A.
According to Lebel, the man allegedly reached over and took a french fry from a child. He also reportedly stated that he wanted a milkshake. The incident added another strange chapter to an already bizarre sequence of events.
Restaurant Helps Child After Incident
Fortunately, the child whose food was taken did not go without a meal. Witnesses said the youngster was provided with a replacement order of french fries at no charge.
While the french fry theft may have seemed minor compared to the alleged carjacking, it became one of the most talked-about details of the case due to its unusual nature.
Deputies Confront Suspect at Nearby Gas Station
Authorities say the suspect did not remain at Chick-fil-A for long. After leaving the restaurant, he reportedly walked to a nearby gas station.
Deputies located him there and attempted to take him into custody. According to investigators, the encounter became confrontational. Coddington allegedly behaved combatively toward law enforcement officers before they were ultimately able to arrest him.
Arrest Followed by Hospital Treatment
Following his arrest, authorities transported Coddington to a hospital for medical treatment related to injuries he sustained during the crash and subsequent events.
Investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the incident while the suspect received care.
Authorities Report Discovery of MDMA
During the investigation, deputies reportedly recovered more than 10 grams of MDMA from the suspect.
MDMA, commonly known by street names such as ecstasy or molly, is a synthetic drug with stimulant and hallucinogenic properties. The discovery added another dimension to the criminal case prosecutors may pursue.
Charges Filed Against Cory Coddington
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Coddington faces numerous criminal charges connected to the incident.
Alleged Offenses Include
Authorities reported that the charges include:
- Carjacking
- Aggravated assault
- Petit theft
- Leaving the scene of a crash
Additional charges may also be connected to the narcotics allegedly recovered during the investigation.
Witnesses Left Shocked by the Incident
For many people who witnessed the events, the entire situation seemed almost unbelievable.
Laurence Lebel, who observed part of the incident, said she found the experience remarkable because it was unlike anything she had previously encountered.
“We’re not from here,” Lebel said. “We don’t see this every day.”
Investigation Continues
As the criminal case moves forward, investigators continue reviewing evidence surrounding the crash, alleged carjacking, theft, and drug-related allegations.
What began as a traffic crash quickly escalated into a series of incidents involving a Good Samaritan allegedly losing her vehicle, a child unexpectedly losing a french fry, and deputies ultimately taking a suspect into custody. The unusual sequence of events has attracted widespread attention because of its strange details and the fact that the alleged victim initially stopped only to help someone she believed was in distress.
