A heartbreaking child abuse investigation in South Carolina has resulted in homicide charges against two legal guardians after authorities alleged that a 4-year-old girl was subjected to abuse, neglect, and severe deprivation before suffering cardiac arrest and dying.

According to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, 42-year-old Nancy Dianne West and 46-year-old Bradley Kyle Craig were arrested and charged with homicide by child abuse in connection with the death of 4-year-old Cassie Cheryl Ann Owens. Investigators say the child endured ongoing mistreatment before her death and was denied proper care while under the guardians’ supervision.

Emergency Call Brings Deputies to Travelers Rest Home

The investigation began on April 24, when deputies responded to a residence located in the 1300 block of Chinquapin Road in Travelers Rest, South Carolina, following a 911 call reporting an unresponsive child. Travelers Rest is a community situated roughly 10 miles north of Greenville.

When emergency responders arrived, they found 4-year-old Cassie in critical condition. She was transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite efforts by medical personnel, the young girl was later pronounced dead.

The circumstances surrounding the child’s death immediately raised concerns and prompted a detailed investigation by law enforcement authorities.

Investigators Say Child Arrived at Hospital in Cardiac Arrest

As detectives examined the case, they discovered evidence that led them to believe Cassie had been suffering from serious neglect prior to her death.

Authorities stated that the child was already in cardiac arrest when she was brought to the hospital. During the course of the investigation, deputies concluded that West and Craig had allegedly deprived the girl of proper nutrition while serving as her legal guardians.

Investigators believe the lack of adequate care contributed to the child’s deteriorating condition before she ultimately suffered cardiac arrest. The sheriff’s office identified West and Craig as the girl’s legal guardians at the time of her death.

Earlier Alleged Abuse Incident Became Key Part of Investigation

The investigation also uncovered an earlier incident that had reportedly brought law enforcement attention to the home more than a year before the girl’s death.

According to local reporting cited during the investigation, Greenville County deputies responded to allegations of child abuse on March 28, 2025. During that incident, authorities investigated claims that Craig had struck a child in the back of the head twice with his hand. Investigators reported that Craig later admitted to doing so.

Officials have not publicly confirmed whether the child involved in that alleged assault was Cassie. However, the prior report became part of the broader investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.

Alleged Head Injury Raises Additional Questions

The revelation that a child in the home had allegedly been struck in the head during a previous investigation added another troubling element to the case.

Authorities have not publicly released detailed medical findings regarding any connection between the earlier reported assault and Cassie’s death. Nevertheless, investigators continued gathering evidence related to the child’s treatment while living under the guardians’ care.

Arrests Made After Lengthy Investigation

Following weeks of investigative work, deputies determined there was sufficient evidence to seek criminal charges against the girl’s guardians.

West and Craig were arrested at their residence and transported to the Greenville County Detention Center. Both were charged with homicide by child abuse, one of South Carolina’s most serious child abuse-related criminal offenses.

Authorities announced the arrests and indicated that the defendants would face bond proceedings as the criminal case moves through the court system.

Community Mourns the Death of Cassie Cheryl Ann Owens

The victim was publicly identified as 4-year-old Cassie Cheryl Ann Owens. News of the child’s death and the allegations surrounding her treatment sparked outrage and sadness throughout the community.

The case highlights the devastating consequences that can result from child abuse and neglect. Investigators allege that instead of receiving protection and care from the adults responsible for her well-being, Cassie was subjected to conditions that ultimately led to her death.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

As the criminal case proceeds, prosecutors are expected to present evidence regarding the child’s condition, the alleged deprivation of nutrition, and the circumstances that led to her cardiac arrest.

West and Craig remain accused of homicide by child abuse. The charges represent allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Additional information may emerge as court proceedings continue and investigators release further details regarding the case.

The death of Cassie Cheryl Ann Owens remains one of the most disturbing child abuse investigations recently handled by authorities in Greenville County, with investigators alleging that a vulnerable child was allowed to deteriorate physically until she ultimately suffered fatal cardiac arrest.
