‘Tried to Be the Cool Mom’: Mother Accused of Letting Teen Daughter Drink Until She Died on Bathroom Floor
A Colorado mother is facing a murder charge after investigators alleged she allowed her teenage daughter to consume large amounts of alcohol for months, ultimately leading to the girl’s death.
Authorities say the tragic case centers on 16-year-old Grace Ryan, who was found unresponsive inside her family’s home in March. Prosecutors claim her mother, 55-year-old Gretchen Ryan, not only knew about her daughter’s drinking but actively supplied alcohol and helped conceal the behavior.
Teen Found Dead Inside Family Home
Police responded to a residence in Arvada, Colorado, after receiving reports of an unresponsive teenage girl. When first responders arrived, they found Grace Ryan dead on the bathroom floor.
According to investigators, evidence recovered from the scene painted a troubling picture of the teen’s final months.
Authorities reportedly discovered more than 170 empty alcohol bottles hidden beneath Grace’s bed and inside her closet. The collection allegedly included vodka and other hard liquor containers accumulated over an extended period.
An electronic device found near the teenager’s body also contained messages exchanged between Grace and her mother, which investigators say revealed ongoing concerns about the girl’s deteriorating health.
Prosecutors Say Drinking Was Allowed for Months
Court documents allege that Gretchen Ryan and her daughter regularly consumed alcohol together and frequently discussed obtaining more alcohol.
Investigators claim digital communications show that the mother arranged alcohol deliveries and attempted to keep the teenager’s drinking hidden from other family members.
The messages allegedly documented Grace’s worsening physical condition, including repeated complaints of serious health problems linked to excessive alcohol consumption.
According to prosecutors, the teenager reported symptoms such as:
- Vomiting blood
- Difficulty eating
- Trouble walking
- Severe illness and weakness
- Ongoing fears about her health
Authorities say the communications suggest Grace repeatedly expressed concern that she might die if her condition continued to worsen.
Disturbing Messages Revealed
Investigators highlighted several messages allegedly sent by Gretchen Ryan before her daughter’s death.
Among the statements cited in court records were messages indicating guilt and concern about the teenager’s drinking.
According to investigators, the mother allegedly wrote messages including:
“Tried to be the cool mom and f—ed up.”
Authorities say another message suggested she feared legal consequences and believed she had made serious mistakes regarding her daughter’s alcohol use.
The messages have become a central part of the prosecution’s case as officials attempt to determine what role the mother allegedly played in the teenager’s death.
Teen Reportedly Left Traditional Schooling
Investigators also allege that Grace was removed from public school and enrolled in an online education program.
According to prosecutors, she had little involvement in outside activities during the months leading up to her death and spent much of her time at home.
Officials believe the isolation may have allowed her alcohol use to continue largely unnoticed by people outside the household.
Medical Findings Raise Concerns
An autopsy reportedly determined that Grace died from aspiration pneumonia related to chronic alcohol use.
Medical examiners also noted signs that investigators say suggested prolonged and excessive alcohol consumption despite her young age.
Authorities reported that doctors observed abnormalities typically associated with long-term heavy drinking, something prosecutors argue should have alerted adults around her to the seriousness of her condition.
Mother Charged With Murder
Following the investigation, Gretchen Ryan was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Prosecutors allege she knowingly contributed to circumstances that resulted in her daughter’s death by repeatedly providing alcohol and failing to intervene despite obvious warning signs.
During questioning, investigators say Ryan acknowledged she may have allowed her daughter to drink alcohol.
She remains in custody while the criminal case moves through the court system.
Investigation Continues
The case has drawn widespread attention because of the allegations that a parent enabled dangerous behavior that prosecutors say ultimately became fatal.
Investigators continue reviewing digital records, medical evidence, and witness statements as they build their case.
If convicted, Gretchen Ryan could face significant prison time. Court proceedings are expected to continue in the coming months as prosecutors seek to determine the full circumstances surrounding Grace Ryan’s death.
